Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Chart from tables

    anyone has a simple example of how to get a bar or pie chart from data in a table?
    or better yet, how to read the data into Xbasic and display it in a chart

    thanks,

    Check the View Chart button on the AlphaSports Invoice form.
    There can be only one.

      Re: Chart from tables

      Along with checking out AlphaSports, there are two ways to generate a chart within Alpha using the built-in SimpleChart. The xdialog genie is the simplest as it builds the code for you. There is also an xbasic method and a search will produce several threads on this....but is much more difficult to understand, but once done is simple. As you can actually embed an xdialog into a form/report now, you could also take the code generated from the xdialog genie and place it in that (have to use a modeless xdialog however for an embedded xdialog).

        Re: Chart from tables

        I used simple charts
        and I used this code in an a5w page... hope it helps

        <!doctype html public "-//w3c//dtd html 4.0 transitional//en">
        <html><head>
        <meta http-equiv=Content-Type content="text/html; charset=unicode"><%a5
        Dim chartX as P
        chartX = ole.Create("SimpleChart.AxisChartGenerator.5")
        dim list as C
        dim pers as c

        query.filter ="personid = "+44 ' you can setup the filter you want for table
        fulllist = table.external_record_content_get("swot1", "Competancy+'|'+AverageRating",query.filter ) ' this gets table from an active link table
        chartX.DataSeries.AddBarSeries ("Competancy", scFillModeAutoSolid )
        chartX.orientation = scChartOrientationHorizontal
        chartX.UnitAxisScaleMode = scScaleModeManual
        chartX.showlegend = 0
        chartx.UnitAxisMaxValue = 5
        chartx.UnitAxisMinValue = -5
        chartX.UnitAxisIncrementMode = scIncrementModeManual
        chartX.UnitAxisIncrement = 1
        dim desc as C
        dim num as N

        ' Change the fill style and color
        dim colorGreen as colordefinition
        dim colorRed as colordefinition
        colorGreen.name = "Green"
        colorRed.name = "Red"
        chartx.caption = "Strengths" 'setup your caption
        chartx.DataSeries(1).FillStyle = scFillModeSolid

        for each x in fulllist ' loops through the list returned from your table above and populates graph
        ' my table returned a string and a number
        desc = alltrim( word(x, 1, "|") )
        num = val( word(x, 2, "|") )
        chartX.DataSeries(1).SeriesData.Add(desc, num )
        next

        chartx.width = 500
        Response.mime_type = "image/jpeg"
        ? chartX.SaveToStream(2)
        delete chartX

          Re: Chart from tables

          Nice to know Claire for when using in a web application....and I suppose (untested) that it could also be used on the desktop (this forum) in an xdialog (can use html there) and also if a html supercontrol is used on a form or report.
