Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Tony I think you're right on the money with your example table. Where would I put the code that is in the 12:41 post though?

      Right now I'm working between the Form->"variables" & Form->"calculated fields" drop-downs from my form window.
      I am new to A5 so most of my experience is with Foxpro, but it seems to me that you should be able to paste this portion anywhere that you can put xbasic code.

      chrtran(left(scan_serial, 1), ignore1, "") + mid(scan_serial, 2, len(scan_serial) - 2) + chrtran(right(scan_serial, 1), ignore2, "")

        In your example:
        Code:
        ignore1= S
        ignore2= D

        When a number is entered -> SXXDSSD

        The result has to be = XXDSS (not XX)
        which part is scan_serial?

          Re: quick help with a calculation

          There is no Mid() function in Alpha so you use

          chrtran(left(scan_serial, 1), ignore1, "") + substr(scan_serial, 2, len(scan_serial) - 2) + chrtran(right(scan_serial, 1), ignore2, "")
          There can be only one.

              In the calculated fields builder for your form, start creating a calculated field

              somename =

              then paste in

              chrtran(left(scan_serial, 1), ignore1, "") + substr(scan_serial, 2, len(scan_serial) - 2) + chrtran(right(scan_serial, 1), ignore2, "")
              There can be only one.

                Re: quick help with a calculation

                got it, and also, should these variables be Session or Layout? They are currently set to Layout.

                When pasting chrtran(left(scan_serial, 1), ignore1, "") + substr(scan_serial, 2, len(scan_serial) - 2) + chrtran(right(scan_serial, 1), ignore2, "")
                into my calculated field i'm getting an error -> Field 'scan_serial' not found. :Function 'left'.

                Furthermore, if my Ignore1 & 2 are more than 1 character it seems like i'll run into trouble with this no?

                  was my example but Id also like to be able to write "SX" in IGNORE1 instead of "S" and have it remove "SX" to give the result = XDSS as well

                    Re: quick help with a calculation

                    I give up.

                    In post #1 you said two variables and later changed it to three. In post #5 you said the ignore variables would be 1 character, now you want multiple characters.

                    Furthermore, if my Ignore1 & 2 are more than 1 character it seems like i'll run into trouble with this no?
                    Sorry, the parameters of this issue are changing faster than we can come up with solutions.

                      Please answer the question asked:
                      Which part of SXXDSSD is scan_serial?
                      Your example does not say which.
                      This a simple issue with possibly simple solution if the question is clear enough.

                        Re: quick help with a calculation

                        Apologies Stan,
                        The only thing that changed was on friday I was using one variable, but over the weekend I though it would be nice to have the option of also being able to ignore characters at the end of the string as well. Being as it seems to be the same idea (just at the end instead of the beginning) I didn't think it would be to tough to figure out, that's my fault.

                        As far as the single character confusion goes, my example had 1 character but that was just an example. All I need is whatever is in ignore1 to be removed from the beginning of scan_serial string and likewise whatever is in Ignore2 to be removed from the end of the scan_serial string, in exactly that order, according to the string that is typed into the ignore fields.

                          Re: quick help with a calculation

                          Gab, the scan_serial is the "entered number/string aka the input string"
                          Here's a few examples:

                          ignore1= S (user entered so it can be anything)
                          ignore2= QX (also user entered)

                          input (scan_serial) -> S1234XQ = 1234
                          S1234=1234
                          1234=1234
                          1234QX=1234

                          12SQX34=12SQX34

                          Let me know if this helps.

                              For length(ignore?) possibly greater than 1 use:

                              strtran(left(scan_serial, len(ignore1)), ignore1, "") + substr(scan_serial, len(ignore1) + 1, len(scan_serial) - (len(ignore1)+len(ignore2))) + strtran(right(scan_serial, len(ignore2)), ignore2, "")

                                abtest.zip

                                Unzip the attachment to your database directory, unless you already have a table named abtest, from the control panel add the table to your database, examine the form test.
