Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Previous Value

    When I click the 'View/Change' button on a menu, a form opens and displays various data elements from a record in a table. The user might make one or more changes and then realize he is in the wrong record. At this point he would click the 'Cancel Data Entry' button on the form. The button OnPush code is:

    :frmMember.cancel(.f.)
    parentform.close()

    The problem is that the data that was just entered IS saved, which I do not want. For instance, the user might change Joe Smith's street address when he meant to change Jim Smith's street address. As it presently stands, the user would have to reenter (if he could remember) the original address. I would much prefer if there was a better way.

    Any ideas?

    Hi Dave,

    Have you got the form to auto save when the form is closed?

      Re: Previous Value

      Would it make sense to have a View button instead of View/Change. Then on the opened form have a Change button which they had to push to begin making changes? The form would be restricted until the button was pushed.

        Re: Previous Value

        Keith - No (not that I'm aware of).

        Stan - good thought except that it seems that what you are suggesting is effectively what I'm doing now. The user could just as easily click two buttons (versus the one I presently have) and still get partway through making changes before he realized he was on the wrong record. What I need is a way to revert to the previous values before the form closes.

          Re: Previous Value

          You'd have to store each field's initial value with <FIELD>.INITIAL_VALUE_GET() or get the whole record with alltext_initial(). Then you could restore all values if they wanted to abort the change.

            Try this for your cancel changes button script.

            Code:
            dim field_list as C
            field_list = parentform.Child_Enum("F=field")
            for each foo in field_list
            	evaluate_template(foo.value+".value = parentform.child("+quote(foo.value)+").field_get().initial_value_get()")
            next
            There can be only one.

              Hi Dave,

              Please see screen shot from Close, from Action Scripting.

              Un-check that and Alpha will ask for confirmation to save record if it has not been done so.

                Keith,

                What you're suggesting generates parentform.close(.f.). I tested it on the Gender field. The value is set to 'Male', I opened the form with the View/Edit button and changed gender to 'Female'. I clicked the Cancel Data Entry button which executes:

                :frmMember.cancel(.f.)
                parentform.close(.f.)

                When I open the table in browse mode, gender is 'Female'.

                  Re: Previous Value

                  Solved the problem! Maybe not the best way, but it works.

                  On the Gender selection button OnPush event, I placed

                  dim global vctemp_sex as c
                  t = table.current()
                  vctemp_sex = t.sex

                  which sets a character variable (vctemp_sex) to the current value of the table field sex.

                  On the Cancel Data Entry button OnPush event, I placed

                  t = table.current()
                  t.change_begin()
                  t.sex = temp_sex
                  t.change_end()
                  parentform.Resynch()
                  parentform.close()

                  which sets a pointer (t) to the current table, initiates a change operation on the current table, sets the table field 'sex' back to the value of vctemp_sex. Then I end the change operation, resynch and close the form.

                  I just have to add this code throughout the form and I'll have what I need.

                  Now, if the user starts changing table data on the form and clicks Cancel Data Entry, all the values will revert to their previous values.

                  Thought I'd explain what I did, in case anyone else faces the same 'challenge'.

                    Does this work?

                    parentform.cancel()
