Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    openoffice writer instad of word

Is it possible to get alpha to merge with OpenOffice writer instead of MS word when I use the word merge button I have noticed that OpenOffice calc opens when I use the export to excel button.

Its all about costs. I have eight PCs in the office and really can't afford to purchase eight copies of word

    Thanks for any replies

A Scotsman thinking about costs? Surely not!
Can you let us know a bit more about the application please John?
There may be another way to create the documents you require.

      Hi Ted

Its simple stuff. I only want to open template type documents for creating letters.

The usual “name” “address” type fields, couple of reference fields to tie the doc to the database.

Doing all the time with word just want to do it with a freebie. Look after the pennies and the pound will look after me.

Alpha letters generator? I am unaware of this facility.

Are you talking about the letters tab in the control panel?

I create a lot of reports that I use as letters. The drawback of this is you can't really edit the body of the text.

Merging with an external word processor makes that easy.

I have not used OpenOffice to do a merge but merging is supported.
With Word merging is one step, but it seems do-able with two steps:
            1. In Alpha export to a pre-determined txt file
            2. In OpenOffice, open document then execute merge with file created in step 1.

Re: openoffice writer instad of word

There is a facility to insert whatever text you want into a letter John.
                Similar to Word Template.
The Alpha Letter sets up the contact details and signature. You fill in the content.

Where is this letter generator? I can't find it in the local help files.

                      Hi Ted

                      Thanks for the file

I see where you're coming from with the memo field. I was aware of this facility, its just not the same as using a fully fledged word processor.

Also memo fields are notoriously unreliable. I have tried all that “bullet proof” stuff and just don't trust them. You should not need to go to those lengths to make something work. If its over engineered it will eventually fail with disastrous consequences. I simply never use memo fields.

If Alpha can't make them work as they are supposed to, keep clear. That's my take on it.

This exercise is because the excel button opens OpenOffice calc I was hoping it would do the same for word processing. I appreciate its not really merging with excel its probably exporting to it. However, alpha misses the fact that I don't have excel loaded on the pc so why not do the same for OpenOffice writer?

Re: openoffice writer instad of word

I've not found Memo fields unreliable so far John, with the exception of the messy "save twice" method.
When I use then, I make them big enough so that the user doesn't have to select the pencil to enter data.
I also have an [OnDepart] action which saves the content if the user navigates to a different Object/Field.
I have a Spellcheck which can be turned on/off for when the User leaves, or it can be run independently.
Might be worth a go with some serious testing rather than "on the fly".

There is another way. Not sure how to do it now, but I did it a long time ago.
You can populate the Windows Clipboard with specific data like Name/Address etc. via Alpha.
Create a button which opens OpenOffice, Select New Doc/Template, Paste.

And another way. Use a 3rd party Macro to copy the data you want, open the OpenOffice, paste it and position cursor at data entry point.
