Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Creating quote page - need thoughts on theory

    Hi all,

I've managed to get myself stuck trying to create a quote page. I'm at the point where I've over thought the problem, and can't see the wood for the trees. I wonder if anyone could give me some ideas/comments?

    I have 2 tables.
    1) Quotes
    2) Products

I want to open a quote window and have the currently available products (defined as the current date being after the start but before the expiry date) as options. The relationship is one product to one quote.

I have looked at doing this using a drop down menu, but this appears to only allow one filter and placing an IF statement in the filter does not seem to work. After the selection I would then copy the reference into my quote table, followed by the additional required fields - obviously changing if the user makes a new selection.

Does this seem like a reasonable solution? If so, or not, any suggestions on how to present the possible products?

    Thanks :)

Can you post the database showing where you have gotten to Rev?
Are the Tables linked in a Set?
I'd probably go for something like:

    Customer Table
    ...Quote Table
Product Table as a Lookup. Filter = Stdate<=date().and.Enddate>=date()

Apologies to anyone I haven't managed to upset yet.
You are held in a queue and I will get to you soon.

      Hi Max,

Have a look at the Alphasports Invoice for the Set design.

That would be the same as a Quote, just make your link to the Products 1:1 and as Ted has suggested, filter the lookup in a date range.
Personally I prefer to use Between().

        Hi all,

Thanks for your help. I've uploaded an example of where I am stuck.

As you will see the user can click 'new quote' which then gives the option of selecting a product. Here is where I am stuck. I want to a) copy the product reference into the quote and b) only show the 'live' products.

I took a look at between, but I'm not sure where I should place such a command.

        Thanks again

Why do you need date fields for your product? What is wrong with a logical field? You would then have a filter in your lookup with Live = .T.

Please look at Alphasports, you really need to. Your present design will create too many problems for you.

            Hi Keith,

The products in question can be revision of each other. A quote can be dated today with a start date in the future, therefore finding the 'live' product at the time is important. I'm not sure I could return a logical value with this in mind?!

            Thanks

              Hi Max,

This now takes us into a whole new area. How can a Quote have a Start Date without an Order?

Are you saying that the product can only be available for a Quote, if the Start Date in the future, is going to be between the two dates of the product?

Re: Creating quote page - need thoughts on theory

                Hi Keith,

                Thanks for your replies.

The products are types of insurance policies which evolve over time. Clients can have one or more quotes, and many people call in advance of their policy starting. The existing system that handles this fails to take into account changes based on dates and will quote with what it thinks is relevant at today's date.

Yes, a product can only be available for a quote if it falls on or between the date. In the example I was trying to use date(), but in reality this would be a date specified by the operator. For example a household policy to start in 7 days. The system would lookup the products available and return a list of those available.

I hope I'm making some sense.

                Thanks

                  Hi Max,

You can see now that your question has changed from when you started this thread.

OK, so you have a list of polices and they would only be available for purchase between certain dates.

The filter would be some sort of Id_Code that would be applicable to that type of policy .AND. Between(date_user_entered,First_date,Second_Date).

This filter goes in field rules Lookup.

Max, you can give a call if you want.

                    This sounds fun!
Max, have you considered using an Active Flag on the Quotes?
Possibly an "Effectivity Date" like I had to use in Vehicle Parts Issues so that the manuals and the items were the same.
