Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Mircrosoft Exchange Emailing

Default Re: Does Alpha Support Microsoft Exchange Protocol to Send Email?

A5 does not support Exchange's protocol. However, Exchange does have a built-in SMTP server, if it is enabled. If you want to use A5 with Exchange, you will have to have your system admin turn on the SMTP server.
This is a quote from Aaron Brown at Alpha in 2006, does anyone know if this still applies in 2011?

    Any help appreciated.

        Re: Mircrosoft Exchange Emailing

Just to be completely clear. Does this apply to just sending using A5's internal e-mail methods? Or is there some way to open Exchange Server as an "external client" (with results similar to email_client_external()) so the user will have a default e-mail started in his regular e-mail program? (This may be a stupid question but I've never used Exchange Server or even seen it in use yet.)

I have a client with this issue and he doesn't want to use A5's internal e-mail.

Related question - if we send through Exchange's SMTP server, what effect does this have when the customer views his "standard" e-mail lists? Does it by any chance show up as sent e-mail? Or is it just like regular POP e-mail sent from Alpha that doesn't show up when viewing the e-mail list directly on the ISP site.

Oops. I just noticed the date was 11/29/2011 not 2012. Maybe that makes a difference?

We can't really help you on this subject, we still have problems with Exchange servers. We do know that smtp has to be 'enabled' this is the case if you wish to use any program to send via smtp server.

            Cal,
I know very little about this, so maybe should leave it to others. Still, I do have a client who uses Outlook with Exchange Server and we do send default email stuff (a canned message, an attachment, etc.) into Outlook from A5 and then the user sends it. But if Outlook isn't already open on the user's desktop, it won't work because as far as I know if they are using exchange server there is no way of passing along the user's password (as I believe you could if exchange server was not being used). That's all I know.

I have a lot to learn, too. My customer is not using Outlook and doesn't want to use a POP3 account and I have no idea what the other accounts are or how they work. And, especially, whether or not they can be made to work with A5 - where A5 opens it and 'inserts' an e-mail like it can with Outlook, Thunderbird, etc.

In regard to Thunderbird (and this has nothing to do with exchange server), I have never been able to get attachments to work properly with Thunderbird. Of course Thunderbird may be on it's way to extinction anyway now that there will be no more official Mozilla upgrades. Which is too bad because Thunderbird is what I have been using as my personal email client for years (for my personal work I don't email from Alpha Five except for occasional testing).

What? You can't get attachments to work with Thunderbird!? I do it all the time - no problem at all. Well ... not now anyway. The secret is to build a routine using the Thunderbird command line arguments. I think I may have posted it somewhere. If not, I'll post it if you want it. It's just way too late tonight.
