Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Modifying "All" fields on form..

    Hello, I have created a program that when a user press "New" button, all fields will change to "Pale Yellow". I was just wondering if there was a easier / quicker way for me to have "ALL" fields change color than have to do the following:

    Field1.fill.color="Pale Yellow"
    Field2.fill.color="Pale Yellow"
    Field3.fill.color="Pale Yellow"
    ETC..ETC.. (29 more fields)

    I had to do the above for 32 fields on form and would like to know if there was way to have all fields on form when "New" button is pressed to change to "Pale Yellow"

    Thank you in advance.... JON

    Check out <object>.child_enum() in the help.

        Re: Modifying &quot;All&quot; fields on form..

        I couldn't get a script to do it, but if you create a color equation with the condition:
        topparent.mode_get()="ENTER"
        You can use the Advanced Copy properties to Paste the color equation to the other fields you select. Of course when the cursor enters a field in Enter mode that field will still appear white if that is the default in the database settings.

        You could also do it with the Properties panel open and set the color dynamically - but copy and paste would be one by one.

          This works for me.

          Code:
          FUNCTION fields_change_fillcolor AS C ( )

          ' list the object classes to change

          dim vLOC as C
          vLoc=<<%list%
          type-in field
          combo box
          text
          %list%

          'get the name of the form
          	dim vobj as C
          	vobj=":"+alltrim(a_form_current)
          	'	msgbox(vobj)

          ' set the desired color
          	dim vcolor as C="Pale Yellow"

          ' get the form objects
          	dim vLo as C
          	vLo=eval(vobj+".child_enum()")
          		'msgbox(vLo)

          ' loop through the form objects checking the object class and change only those in the list
          	dim vow as C
          	dim vclass as C
          	for i = 1 to line_count(vLo)
          		vow=word(vLo,i,crlf())
          		vclass=eval(vobj+":"+alltrim(vow)+".class()")
          		if vclass $ vLOC
          			evaluate_template(vobj+":"+alltrim(vow)+".fill.color="+s_quote(vcolor))
          		end if
          	next

          END FUNCTION
          fields_change_fillcolor()

            Re: Modifying &quot;All&quot; fields on form..

            Thanks Robin & Mike. I'll give both your solutions a try. Like I said in the original post, I've got all fields changing to "pale yellow" when user presses "new" button, then changes back to white when user presses "save". Works great, but I had to individually set the fill color of (32) text fields and I thought there's gotta be a easier way to do this.

            Thanks again... JON

              Yes there is. Let the code do the heavy lifting. Eval() and evaluate_template are awesome functions!

                Hi Mike,
                I had tried a similar script and couldn't get the fields to show the color - though the trace window reported the command correctly. Turns out it was the form (because it had a supercontrol on it?), the same script on the default form worked fine.

                Edit: Nope it wasn't the supercontrol it was the messing I did first with the color equation - you can't do both!

                  Here's my function
                  Code:
                  'With thanks to Mike Wilson
                  FUNCTION cx_fld_fill AS C (vcolor = "" AS C )
                  	trace.Clear()
                  	dim frm as p
                  	dim frmnm as c
                  	dim fld as p
                  	dim fldnm as c
                  	dim lst as c
                  	dim txt as c
                  	dim cnt as n
                  	dim i as n = 1
                  	' get the desired color if not already set
                  	if vcolor = "" then
                  	    clst = a5.Color_Enum()
                  		clst=sortsubstr(clst,crlf())
                  		vcolor = ui_get_list2("Colors","",clst)
                  		trace.WriteLn("Color: "+vcolor)
                  	end if
                  	' get field list
                  	frm = topparent.this
                  	frmnm = frm.name()
                  	trace.WriteLn("Form: "+frmnm)
                  	lst = frm.child_enum("f=field")
                  	cnt = line_count(lst)
                  	'change the fill color in the field list
                  	for i = 1 to cnt
                  		fldnm = word(lst,i,crlf())
                  		txt = ":"+frmnm+":"+alltrim(fldnm)+".fill.color = "+quote(vcolor)
                  		evaluate_template(txt)
                  		trace.WriteLn(txt)
                  	next
                  	cx_fld_fill = vcolor
                  END FUNCTION
                  If put in the OnEnter and OnSave events for the form, you can set the color and change it back. Also I added a button to change the color back if the new record is cancelled. Which can also be used in the Cancel button on the form's toolbar.

                  Topparent.cancel()
                  cx_fld_fill("Winback")
