Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Here's my UDF to make the A5 function give the right picklist:

    Code:
    FUNCTION tbl_info AS C (tablename AS C )
    	dim shared tbl_name as c
    	tbl_name = tablename
    	tbl_info = a5_display_tableset_info(tbl_name)
    END FUNCTION

        Hi Robin,

        Get rid of the word shared in the function. It serves absolutely no purpose here and can actually cause problems. Read my tips on Variable dimensioning.

        Code:
        FUNCTION tbl_info AS C (tablename AS C )
        	dim [COLOR="#FF0000"]shared[/COLOR] tbl_name as c
        	tbl_name = tablename
        	tbl_info = a5_display_tableset_info(tbl_name)
        END FUNCTION

          Hi Ira,
          I only did that because the var passed into the function argument is shared (I think), and that was the original var I was using til you mentioned using a keyword to get a picklist. I figured if one was shared, then the var I passed it to ought to be too! Wimmen's logic is a bit different you know ;-)

          It's nice to know I am not stuck with just my own ideas on the things I don't know!

            A function's definition parameters are all local values (unless passing a pointer, array pointer or using BYREF keyword). Each usage of the function has that parameter (either expression or a constant) value passed to the function's local value/name (actually it's on a stack physically)

              Re: XB to view the properties card for a specified table

              Mornin' Ira.
              What I want to achieve, in one line of code, is the population of a Calculated Field displayed on a Form with a Tabbed Object.
              The Tabbed object has the following Tabs text.
              Customer/Address/Contact Details

              I have played with the following components and cannot get the ducks in a row as they say.

              [Tabbed1.Tab_Get()] Gives me the tab number
              [Tabbed1.tabs.sheet.text] Gives me the tab text - but only the first tab. Changing tabs does not change the value in the cal field, nor does Refresh
              So I looked at
              [Tabbed1.tabs.sheet.Tab_Get().text] which should work but doesn't - well I cannot get it to.

              Any help would be appreciated. If it has to be multi line code then so be it, but the aim is to get it in a Calc field.

                Re: XB to view the properties card for a specified table

                Ted,

                I got a single line expression to work but not in the regular calculated field area of the form. Trying to make a calc field with the expression gave me an error that the field could not be found.

                Tabbed1.Tabs.Sheet[Tabbed1.tab_get()].Text

                I placed a regular old text object on the form and then using the dynamic properties of the object's text property found in the properties taskpane/tasklist I used the above expression. This seems to do what you want.

                  Re: XB to view the properties card for a specified table

                  Hi Tim, thanks. I wouldn't have thought of that approach.
                  In V10, the Tabbed1.Tabs.Sheet[Tabbed1.tab_get()].Text works but doesn't refresh unles it is done manually.
                  It was the placing of the square brackets which stumped me!
                  I'll post this where it will be found more easily.
