Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Importing Layouts

For reasons I cannot explain, 6 of my forms are no longer showing in my Control Panel. I have attempted to use the 'Import Layout' command but without success. (The missing forms are still intact in an earlier copy of my database). Where can I find instructions on the Import/Export commands?

    Re: Importing Layouts

Import layout is used to restore previously backed up versions, backed up by Alpha's automatic revision backup.

Why not open the earlier copy of your database on the same machine, choose each layout, and select Copy To...
    There can be only one.

Just a thought, but has the table(s) containing the forms been dropped or??

        Actually I misspoke.

Import layout is used to import a layout which you or someone else previously created with Export Layout. Restore Prior Version is the utility which allows you to revert to an earlier backed up form.

Larry, Dave's comment is the most likely.
          Suggestion.
Build a new database, and add the Tables from your backup - one by one.
View the Form tab each time until you have the ones you are after.
As Stan mentioned, CopyTo will work with the flimsiest of possible connections - as long as there is a field to latch on to in the target Db it will show something - but you may get a lot of erors to resolve.

            Many thanks to all.

Stan: the Copy To.. did the trick. (I'd failed to see the <More...> when I tried it earlier). Although the lost Form appeared, the embedded child browses now had no records. Further investigation revealed that the relevant Set had all the child table relationships deleted.

Dave/Ted: I guess that is what you were referring to.

I made a new Set and copied the lost form to that Set and all appears to be back to normal.

            Once again, many thanks.

              Re: Importing Layouts

If I could just ask one more question... Is there any logical explanation for the above 'deletions'?

All of the tables had vanished in the Set in question, even the Primary table. Plus, all of the 6 missing Forms also used that particular Set. I have now checked all my other sets and forms etc and cannot find anything else missing or changed. (My database is on a server, with optimized versions on PC's).

                Re: Importing Layouts

If you do not have control of the server, ask for a transaction log for the server maintenance. See if someone has removed or overwritten your files.
Also, ask to see the backup log.
There was a post regarding the .dbf files becoming corrupt on a server when a new version of software was added. This might cause the tables to become unreadable.
If the primary table is deleted in a set, it cannot be loaded as a set. The individual tables can, but not as a set.
Forms attached to a set will also seem to disappear as the set cannot be activated and displayed.
As you have experienced, recreating the set will allow a reconnection and display.

You might want to consider some form of regular database backup as a ZIP so you can get the whole shebang back rather than using Restore from a Backup.
Also, suggest using A5Doc for recording purposes. It's worth the money - believe me.

                  Re: Importing Layouts

Larry, the set "design", and the form layouts based on that set are stored in the set's "dictionaries". (For details see "Alpha Five File Types" in the help system.) Something happened to your system that either (a) replaced your set's dictionaries... this can happen if you try to create another set and use the same name as the former; (b) corrupted your set's dictionaries; or (c) changed the primary table so that the set design no longer could be used.

I think (c) is most likely. Have you tried to "import" data to the primary table from an external source (excel, csv, etc.) ?

                    Re: Importing Layouts

Thanks very much for the guidance. I will search the server logs and hopefully find something. With regard to the set's dictionaries, I don't think I have made any changes in that particular area of my system for some time. However, I am always adding or changing something, so maybe I have forgotten! Also, the A5doc looks interesting - I hadn't heard of it until now.
                    Many thanks.
