Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

G - this has worked for years, and yes I'm setting the correct index. The scripting is not the problem. Even a manual find by key hangs it.

Re: Form hangs on index find

Steve, to recap if you would.

      1) There is only one form which evidences the problem
      2) All "find by" indices fail with this form
      3) The "find by" using a Default Form or Browse works

If you search in the rogue form using a Text Search, or Find by Form search, does that work?

There are few places left to investigate.
Have you deleted an index, recreated it from scratch and tried it?

Last shot, I'm happy to test the table and form here for you if you want to send a stripped down anonymised table.

Apologies to anyone I haven't managed to upset yet.
You are held in a queue and I will get to you soon.

Re: Form hangs on index find

        Hi Steve,

Also, on your home PC are you using the exact same dbf and fpt file from the table?
Two other things that could hang it is a corrupted dbf header and/or corrupted fpt header. Transfer those files to your PC and see if any hangs.

If the failure is with only specific finds (vresult values), then those records may be corrupted. If that's the case, see if you can try to do a table copy, and replace the old dbf/fpt one with the new ones, although it is possible, the corruptions could just be copied into the new one. However if you recreate the table structure in a new table (or empty a good version of the table), you could do an append of the old table which would copy each record field by field, and that might eliminate the corruptions,

Also related to this is the initial index/sort when the form is opened. The default form is going to use record number sort which works. Try that on your "bad form"

Ira's right. I got the .dbf and .fpt from the client, the the .fpt is corrupted.

Re: Form hangs on index find

Steve - because I could not find the thread about the enormous amount of data that was going back and forth on the network - I am posting this here (Finian was telling me about it)

In my hospital app, we ran into the same issue. An IT guy with a terrific program tracked the data going back and forth when I opened a form, and created a new record - He stopped counting at 40 MB, he said.

The fix was to create the record first, and open the form based on that record number.

Also, unless they exempt you from virus programs, that will also sometimes bring it to a crawl..

but it is incomprehensible how much happens when you are running a shadowed ADB.

in all my cases, 99% of the purpose of the work station is for Alpha, so it isn't too big a deal - but could be otherwise.
