Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Re: Record Selector Number

Tim, I used your example (msg # 12) some time ago and it works great. On my attachement I inquired on vehicle 105 for certain dates that come up with 62 records. The big number below all this is the actual record number in the database. Thanks for supplying it to us. Maybe Preston can use this in his appl.

    thanks

Question: How can you append .count to compute_field_statistics("Product_Id") as this returns a value of type C according to the wiki?
(I know the wiki also makes reference to this returned variable of type C also being a .Dot type variable.)

Looking at the help files, I notice that both the wiki & help file indicate this function returns a value of type C, but it's ALSO a .dot variable???? Possibly I don't fully understand the meaning of a .Dot variable....

If I didn't know better, I'd think the function "returns" a value of type C as stated in help, but actually "produces" a .Dot variable which has sub-elements / properties.... And therefore you can in fact append this call to a function with .count, which is a property of the .Dot variable???????

          Re: Record Selector Number

          Hi Robert,

I would say the help/wiki is in error here. The return type in my testing is P. I never really noticed that it said C or if I did I didn't pay attention to it, or I did And have forgotten. I guess when I read dot var I assumed P

While having the Alphasports invoice form open try this in the interactive tasklist (the interactive that is part of the form editor not the main Interactive window. Although you could link the main interactive if you wanted to.)

          Code:
          ?typeof(compute_field_statistics("browse1:description"))

          and

          ?typeof(compute_field_statistics("browse1:description").count)

          ?compute_field_statistics("browse1:description")

          ?compute_field_statistics("browse1:extension")
Notice that running this against a numeric object that you get more info. This is the same as the Stat icon on the standard toolbar.

There is a similar function for a table pointer that sheds a bit more light on this. <TBL>.FIELD_STATISTICS() where the result variable is listed as P

            Hi Tim;

I know how to set the IW session using the menu (which does the same thing I presume you suggested I do.)
But I don't know how to get to the "Interactive Task List." ~ Could you show me a photo, or elaborate on what IW you are referring to? ~ Thanx.

Essentially, a "Dot Variable" is a Pointer, right? (& what's the difference, if any?)

Note: I did see that it is type P using the regular IW and setting the session. ~ Typo!

PS: I'm at the point where I could have/should have checked for that on my own. Problem is, I usually assume documentation is right, and I'm "misguided." ~ Just another part of my "steeping-stone.")

                Got it, thanks Tim!

I thought the form should be running. Just the other day I realized you could set [link] the IW session to a particular window and use it while the form was running. "within the instance of the form" (thus providing relative object references etc. ~ nice feature)
