Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Installing V10 Full in W7 64 problem

    Symptom:
    when I click "Help-About Alpha5" - nothing happens
when I click "request an activation key" - nothing happens
when I open an app, the autoexec doesn't fire (changing in settings doesn't help)

have uninstalled and reinstalled several times, removing the V10 registry key and all subkeys
have installed in program filesx86, and outside of program files
have installed, "run as administrator" and not as adminstrator
I am the administrator on the machine, anyway

ODD: the Runtime installed and runs perfectly, and can click "Help-About Alpha" and shows normally

Do not know for sure but because you have installed it and something went wrong it could be that the registry is keeping you from entering the license number. I take it that is what you mean by "request an activation key". Not sure as I do not remember ever seeing anything like that. Could be because I have never run an unregistered trial version of Alpha 5.

Anyway, the license number is entered under View/Settings/System/License . If that does not take your license number then you can manually add it into the registry.

Re: Installing V10 Full in W7 64 problem

If I recall, I had a similar problem with 10.0 Installing with "Run as Admin" didn't work 100% correctly.
(Fewer problems with 10.5 and no issues with 11.)

I had to log on as an actual administrator to install.... (after fully uninstalling first)
Also, I think there are two builds of version 10. One with the new, and one with the old compiler.
(I never had much luck with the installed versions based on the newer compiler in v.10)

Come to think of it.... I think at one time I had to use the special Admin account (the one that's not even enabled by default) unless you boot into safe mode. But that was with Vista. Some things changed, but some things didn't...?????

To try this, you must first enable this account: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials...e-disable.html
If I were a betting man, I'd wager that if you try this, (after a full uninstall) and then install v.10 from this account, you'll get a working installation.

PS: Good luck & keep the $!

It's all about the "framework." (I suppose an "a5-induced" hard drive crash is now in order?)

        thanks all - tried everything

The answer is likely not worth knowing. Al Bocholtz suggested installing on a virgin W7. I had saved the factory install to a ghost image, and when I restored to that image it installed correctly. I groaned, since this meant I had lost a day. It is certainly a Windows issue, as after I installed, I saved the registry key for V10 and the folder containing Alpha, restored back, and replaced V10 and imported the registry key, but it still wouldn't work right. So I will just redo the lost day and keep going. At least I got a fix!!!

Interesting bit of trivia: I noticed that Office 2010 is 32 bit, which is what shipped with the new machine. When I asked support about it, they said they were having so many problems with Office in 64 bit, that it is still 32 bit!!

Re: Installing V10 Full in W7 64 problem

finally trace the issue to this:
if V10 Full is installed, and then I install V11 full, when I activate V11 Full it "ruins" V10 full

but - if I install V11 first, and activate, and THEN install va10 all is well

You're better off with 32 bit Office also because: 64bit doesn't work as expected with most 3'rd party tools.... (Like 32 bit Alpha!)
I had researched this over a year ago, and decided to completely avoid the 64bit install option.

Re: Installing V10 Full in W7 64 problem

              Gentlemen,

I, too, am running Win 7 64 bit. I had A5V10 installed (and the runtime) and then added and activated V11 and the V11 runtime. I just verified that V10 still works fine.

I guess this is just another of those down the rabbit hole windows mysteries to which we must resign ourselves. And it turns out that I my copy of office is also 32 bit. Never checked before.
