Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Installing V10 Full in W7 64 problem

(am posting here, in case anyone else has had the same problem in V10)

    Symptom:
    when I click "Help-About Alpha5" - nothing happens
when I click "request an activation key" - nothing happens
when I open an app, the autoexec doesn't fire (changing in settings doesn't help)

have uninstalled and reinstalled several times, removing the V10 registry key and all subkeys
have installed in program filesx86, and outside of program files
have installed, "run as administrator" and not as adminstrator
I am the administrator on the machine, anyway

ODD: the Runtime installed and runs perfectly, and can click "Help-About Alpha" and shows normally

Strange, I've had it running in that environment for over a year with no issues.

    It's my own personal laptop - I5 - Win 7 64 bit..

Do you have a virgin win 7 machine to try it with? ( you can almost buy one for $200...)

I can't even begin to guess what win settings could be effecting this..

Re: Installing V10 Full in W7 64 problem

The answer is likely not worth knowing. Al Bocholtz suggested installing on a virgin W7. I had saved the factory install to a ghost image, and when I restored to that image it installed correctly. I groaned, since this meant I had lost a day. It is certainly a Windows issue, as after I installed, I saved the registry key for V10 and the folder containing Alpha, restored back, and replaced V10 and imported the registry key, but it still wouldn't work right. So I will just redo the lost day and keep going. At least I got a fix!!!

Interesting bit of trivia: I noticed that Office 2010 is 32 bit, which is what shipped with the new machine. When I asked support about it, they said they were having so many problems with Office in 64 bit, that it is still 32 bit!!

Mike, I feel your pain with Win7. Had all sorts of issues earlier but it sems to have settled down now that the new updates coming through.
In the beginning I had all sorts of problems and still ocassionally get glitches after a Windows update.
Got it running on a Desktop wheich is 99% stable and a Laptop which is sort of stable, however developing on the L/top over my network lost me about 3 hours when a complex set became corrupt.
              I blame Windows.

Re: Installing V10 Full in W7 64 problem

                thanks Ted
guess what - the problem came back - was ready to jump off roof

restored to factory install (via ghost)
went throught a methodical step by step to find when V100 went south
finally able to trace it to the event of activating V11 Full

                re-restored - installed V11 first and activated
                installed V11 runtime
                rant all patches

                THEN

I installed V10 full, and runtime and all patches, and all is well

so there is something about activatiing V11 full (if V10 full has already been installed) that ruins V100 full.

                go figure

this has taken an unbelievable amount of time to finally (hopefully) resolve!!

Mike, I hadn't realised that you had installed V11.
I had problems with V10.5 after installing V11 too, so I dumped it for the time being. And I cleared the registry.

                          Gentlemen,

There must be something else going here. I use Windows 7 64 bit and have A5V10 and A5V11 and their respective runtimes installed and activated. I show none of problems Martin describes. Perhaps I am overlooking and effect of the order in which these were installed.

Bill, I had issues after loading V11 trial. V9 and V10.5 were already resident.
I removed it and had to reload V10 and patches, as well as V9 which started playing up.

I never had the V11 trial. I had V10 and previous versions loaded and never had to take them off. Then I added V11 and runtime without incident. There are enough uncontrolled variables there.
