Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Displaying a PDF File in v10

Looking for some assistance on displaying a PDF file from within a form. In my research, I see that I should be using Action Scripting, but I cannot locate where this function/feature is.

Ultimately, I am looking to be able to click a button and bring up a form based on a field which has the path/file name.

We are running v10, so any thoughts ideas would be appreciated.

        Sample attached.
I have stuff on a D drive, so select the PDF of your choice using the file picker.
You can either use the Show PDF button, of let the Supercontrol handle things.

        Any probs, just holler.

          Thanks everyone for the feedback.

It appears the easiest way to view a PDF file is through the SuperControl feature. Yet, when I use the SuperControl, my system seems to not know how to open a .pdf file and I receive a Windows Message Box telling me "Do you want to save this file, or find a program online to open it?". Again, this is just a standard .pdf file and my XP system is already associated to open .pdf files with Foxit Reader. Having the form open in a onscreen window/frame is very nice.

The other option SYS_OPEN() worked right away - but opens in a separate window (again, handy).

I am going to spend some time trying to determine how/why the SuperControl does not recognize the file association - so any thoughts on that would be appreciated.

          John

Update: It would appear that Alpha Five is calling on Internet Explorer to open/display the PDF file. I personally use Chrome on my system as the default browser. When I start up IE and try to open a PDF file in it, I receive the notification that IE does not know how to associate to a PDF file - so that is where the error is coming from. Now, who is familiar with IE that can provide me some details on how to instruct IE to associate PDF files with Foxit Reader?

You do need Adobe Reader installed. If it is you may want to make sure it is the current version.

John, is there any reason not to use Adobe?
Seems like you are fighting your way out of the corner using other non "standard" s/ware.

                Ted

I think I did say say Adobe, I mentioned Adobe Reader because I recalled reading the supercontrol used it and therefore it needed to be installed. I mentioned making sure it was updated because I thought the OP mentioned using Chrome as the default browser. Being a user of Chrome and given how often it updates, I thought it would be good to make sure that all the software was current. I know how often I get Adobe update notices and it is more than tempting to ignore them. I also have some recollection that I had a similar problem with Chrome and the Adobe update fixed it.

So if I suggested anything other than Adobe be used, my apologies.
