Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Slow write operation

Two weeks ago we got problem with our application. Alpha Five worked, but any write operation took very long time.

    What we tried:
    - check the server and network statistic, just a little bit traffic
    - copy form linux server to other servers or local machine, no luck
    - compress database, no luck
    - rebuilding indexes, no luck
    - dictionary update, no luck
    - restore dictionary files .d* and set files .s* no luck
    - restore .adb file success

We compare the adb files and couldn't find any significant changes, except some path statements.

Our standard path is \\linux-server\4all\datenbanken\a5_haup and other sub directories.
The adb file path statements looks some times like this:
    \\linux-server\4all\DFNW9U~E\a5_haupt\kk.ddd# ## )\\linux-server\4all\datenbanken\a5_haupt\#oo#.

    So we have two questions:

    1. Is there any issue with long path names in Alpha Five could not find here on the messageboard. Can not remember any note elsewhere, but may be I missed.

    2. Somebody else who had comparable experience or any ideas?

    Re: Slow write operation

Cornelius, I have no idea about whats happening.

I would suggest to add on forms/browses a variable with the pathname so you can see when and where in your application these values are changed.

As you almost have a double pathname look at your scripts and functions where you change the name of a subdirectory. How and where do you handle this? Can you Irrtumlicherweise find something like: Pathname = pathname + new pathname where you intended: pathname = new pathname?

What changes are made in the Xbasiccode within forms and browses? Are they anyway acting correct?

When and what happened the first time you discovered it and what was the last recently change in the application?

Look at your directories. If Alpha added new entries like kk.ddd look at the date, time and other contents. If there are unpredictable results do they mean something to you?

Do you use names with numerics for subdirectories like 12062012 or 1206 or xyz06?

Good luck and do not forget to enjoy the footballmatch!

      Re: Slow write operation

Hallo Ton, thank you for your reply.

In fact we played around a lot with the foolish copy of our database, but couldnt repeat that behavior of slow writing operation.
My scripts use alias path specification or we use global variable, because my boss want to transfer the database to his laptop. We didnt change any xbasic script, just layout tuning. So we inspect the adb files with the text editor to see, what the difference. At this time we saw the reduction of long path names. So we asked here at this forum.

Look at your directories. If Alpha added new entries like kk.ddd look at the date, time and other contents. If there are unpredictable results do they mean something to you?

No, neither. The time synchronisation with the server was o.k. and we dont use numeric subdirectories.

May be Alpha Five wasnt the reason. Because the problem didnt appear suddenly, it grows slowly within three days. I think the problem may be was a DNS issue. My knowledge at this isnt so good and I havent a monitoring tool for that. We just could see, that the server wrote 200-300 kBytes/s. So the next improvement will be new hard-disk storage with a full raid controller. At the moment we renow our network cable and take off many little switches.

Good luck and do not forget to enjoy the footballmatch!

Is it an option just to test the behaviour of A5 on the laptop to find out if its a networkissue?

Local copy was working perfect. <hm>
Other workstations had the same problem.

            Cornelius,

You might want to check your anti-virus (mal-ware) settings. Perhaps they changed recently. You will experience a slow down if your AV package is monitoring writes to the database directory.

              Re: Slow write operation

              Hi Tom,

the database directory is located on a linux-server, I don't think that the AV program will scan this directory.

How ever, at this time we had some trouble with our Avira Professional Version. 3-4 computer didn't start at the morning.

At least I got a new machine, now Windows 7 with more RAM, which is pretty fine working.
Hope we will finish our network and server improvement in near future, I want to upgrade to Version 11.

              Thanks

              Cornelius
