Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Show or hide button on record form

    Having searched the forums could not find anything that addressed this.

    Am opening a record form that has several buttons to perform various tasks. (i.e. add, change, update, etc) I want to hide the buttons that are not useable with the record that is displayed. i.e. if status="" hide 'button 2' because it is used only if status<>"".

    Nothing in the button properties allows for show/hide option so am not sure what to do. ANy suggestions will be appreciated.

    TIA

    Don

    if status=""
    button2.visible = .F.
    else
    button2.visible = .T.
    end if

    You would likely want to use that code in the form's oninit event and the onchange event for the status object on the form.
    There can be only one.

      I'm not questioning Stan's logic, just adding to it. If "Status" is field in the record being retrieved, you would want to place that code in the on_fetch event of the form. That way, for each record retrieved, you would have appropriate button availability.

        Thanks, Tom. I didn't completely think through the process apparently.

          Thanks for the suggestions.

          However, when I did the Onfetch I got the error

          Script:Onfetch line:15
          IF status<>"R" THEN
          Variable "status" not found.

          and went into infinite loop with that error that could only be terminated using task master kill.

          when I put it in Oninit I also got that error but it continued to the form but did not hide the button. If I changed to the next record it did not hide the button either.

          looks like there has to be another way.

            Status should refer to the table field status. If the form is based on a child table in a set you might have to use

            tablename->status.

            Probably safer to refer to the status form object since we're coding the onchange event too.

            IF status.value <>"R" THEN

            assuming the objectname is status.

              to clarify some what . . .

              the form is for a set and the "status" is a field in the parent that defines the parent type. there are 3 child tables that are used to fill 2 browse forms and data in the form.

              the buttons are various action scripts that have code currently in them that checks the "status" prior to execution to be sure it is the proper type for that button and ends the script if improper status is found.

              What I am trying to do is eliminate accidental button pushing by hiding the buttons if the status is wrong.

              Hope this helps

                adding ".value" eliminated the error but the button still is visible

                  My bad.

                  button2.object.visible = .F.

                  same syntax with =.T.

                      Don,

                      I am guessing you are fairly new to Alpha Five and XBasic. Heck, even an old pro like Stan forgot the need for 'object' in "button2.object.visible = .F.". Anyway, an awful lot can be learned in the XBasic Code Editor by using the XBasic Explorer. It not only shows what you might be doing wrong, it can be an excellent learning tool. Plus you won't be taxing Stan's brain. See the image below.

                        Thanks all of you for your help.

                          Just continuing this, instead of making the button visible or not visible, you could have chosen ".enable()" with a ".T." or ".F." inside the parens that would have greyed out the button instead of completely hiding it.
