Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Tom - Thanks for the good thoughts; in the end all that matters to me is getting this application sorted out. The rest is politics as they say.

Maybe if license and compatibility are synonymous but I don't think they are.

        Tom,

I would bet that alpha was working with win8 long before we could. They would have tested v11 and found it faulty and fixed it. They would have known all prev versions would have a problem. Why not alert us?

It doesn't really bother me much, but others could be in a quandry.

John, please think? If you say what you just said to alpha, they will never want to say anything ahead of time so they don't lose business.

          Re: windows 8

This conversation has changed to from resolving issues with Window to what Alpha should have said when. I have been raising this issue of Win 8 and compatibility impact on develop tools for over 5 monts on this message board. I guess I have a different philosophy on customer support which by no means is saying I correct.

If I had a customer who contacted me about a solution the had purchased and asked if I knew whether it was compatible with Win 8, I would answer them. If I knew a product I had distrbuted widely was not going to be compatibile with Win 8, I would try to find a way to let them know. Thats just me and no one has to agree. Customer Support and service goes beyond sales numbers it includes good will.

I anguished a long time and some of that is reflected in the posts of many months ago about A5 being the right tool for me in this project. Some of that is recorded in the message board. I made the decision to go with A5, I own that decision no one else.

Now I am going to start a new thread that will report on v10.5 compatiiblity issues and possibles solutions. I will make every effort to stay out the politics of the issue. Alpha will do as they want and I will do as I want. If I leave the platform I know I will not missed. If I stay with the platform they will care less. In the end I need to focus on the problem at hand and solve it. Everything else is just talk.
          Regards,

          John W.

Where in the newsletter was this offer? The one sent to me talked about the subscription and a $599 package or at least thats all I saw.

                  Re: windows 8

Well you must be special too Dave. 'cos I didn't get anything like that offer. Just the same as John.
Now it could just be that Alpha Marketing got muddled and sent certain individuals different pricing plans.
The Newsletter did suggest the there was a "very special offer just for me". $500? Nope.
                  I was hoping for V11 at $150, and unlimited R/t at $50.
Given that V12 - sorry Alpha Anywhere - is due out, the V11 mid life kicker (old IBM Term) at $200 all in would be something I would go for.
Even then it would be speculative as I don't have an urgent need for V11 and no new revenue stream to justify it.
                  Over to you Alpha.

yeh I got that offer too
I see it is repeated at the bottom of the newsletter tonight/today
I too dont have a pressing need to leave v10.5 but I also dont want to be pressed when clients begin to intro W8 and I havent warned them, in turn that what I have sold them wont work.
I am thinking (well,,,now saying) of putting the ball in their court now and ask if they are happy to stick - or raise the ante a bit to be future equipped.
Cross subsidise the 300$ cost to me (Dev and Runtime in this case)
If they choose not then I have kept my honour and I can hold off too.

Well, I have some customers that have paid very good money for some of my apps and they have(in my opinion) the right to be able to use them. I have other apps on the web and on cd's that will not perform properly on win8. I guess I will bite the bullet. Of course, I could devise a work around. Maybe I will spend a few days on the work around first.

V10 Desktop does work on Windows 8 - in Win 7 Compat Mode.
Same situation as we had when Win 7 came out.
John Willems has done a lot of work on this and is close to a solution so that the users are not aware that Alpha is running in Win 7 mode.
His findings are that the V10 Web stuff is a bit "iffy" on Win8, and he has started a thread on his experiences.

It seems there are registry entries that will cure the issue for win8 and v10.5??

I have not run into any problems yet because none of my clients have notified me. It will be coming and maybe someone will have the solution.

I would help if I had win8. I just bought a new computer a few weeks ago, but it came with win7 home.

Once We do have the tested and agreed on solution, I/we would like to make an update with Astrum that could be shared with all, if possible. It would simply update the registry(and/or) with whatever is needed. Anyone want to help? It could be posted in one of my/your websites somewhere so all could simply download it. Should be quite small.

This is not to harm alpha in any way, but should be a stop gap for the apps that do not covert quickly to v11 or for the ones not able to upgrade just yet.
