Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Putting a UDF return into an array variable - How to?

    I have a UDF that will perform the same function as the right click menu does to compile a library into an aex file. If I use the genie to select multiple files, it will create an aex with the same name as the app I am in - which is not what I want to do. I am using this function in the IW to individually select each file and would like to have the list in the IW put into a variable so another function can use the same list. Or at least that is what I think I want to do ;)

    The IW actually returns the names of *.alb files but I can fix the list to show it like this screenshot - which are the file names I need:

    This next UDF uses a default list with the files above, and I can choose to accept that list or create another. Instead I want the next function to use the list from the first function. Initially the two functions in the IW were enough but now I have more files to select from for different apps - some which are local and some which are on the server and would like to automate this in a script - regardless of which app I run it from, it will return the name of the app aex and copy it to the app directory and optionally to the server. This is the return data for the AEX_COMBINE():

      I'm struggling to understand what you mean.

      I don't see any list as Alpha understands lists. A list would be a crlf() delimited sequence of values. It appears you have executed the a5tools_aex_create() function three times with something different selected during the interaction with the function (which we can't see).

      Thus you don't have a list. You have three separate return values.
      There can be only one.

        Hi Stan,
        That is it exactly. I am going to use this in a script and guess I would clear the variable at the beginning and then loop thru the function until cancelled, returning a blank - stuffing the variable with each of the selections before going to the next step. That is what I don't know how to do. I don't have much experience with creating lists. Any ideas?

          Probably something like

          vlist = ""
          vlist = vlist+ a5tools_aex_create() +crlf()
          vlist = vlist+ a5tools_aex_create() +crlf()
          vlist = vlist+ a5tools_aex_create() +crlf()

          as many times as you like.

          Still unclear as to the user input required by a5tools_aex_create()

            Thanks Stan,
            I'm still tweaking it so I can use it in a script or I would post the function. I don't know what made me think it would be any harder than your example...a duh moment for sure!

              You can get the count of the .aex files in the directory with filefind.get(). Then you should be able to know how many times to call the function.
