Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Change form calc from function Total to dbsum and dbcount

    I have about 21 variations of the following calcs in my form. I use this to display a running calculation of quantity and sum of various fields for the table. Each of the calculations are displayed on the form as the user moves from one record to the next. This form is painfully slow to load on application startup and moves on fairly fast thereafter. I suspect that the total function could be replaced with dbsum and dbcount and improve my performance? I can't seem to get the calculation built though. I am getting error that curbal can't be found

    Table name: cases.dbf
    Index built: Categories = order expression: category filter expression blank, direction ascending, include all
    Curbal is a numeric field

    bankruptcyamt = total(if(Active=.t..and.Category="Bankruptcy",Curbal,0))
    bankruptcycount = total(if(Active=.t..and.Category="Bankruptcy",1,0))
    BankruptcyLoss = total(if(Active=.t..and.Category="Bankruptcy",Expectlosses,0))

    Re: Change form calc from function Total to dbsum and dbcount

    bankruptcyamt = total(if(Active=.t..and.Category="Bankruptcy",Curbal,0))

    should translate to

    bankruptcyamt = dbsum("cases","categories","bankruptcy","if(active,curbal,0)")

    I think. Would be easy to test with a sample table.

      Stan
      on the speed issue I was imagining how much the table/s need to be recursed for 21 iterations of full scope summations.
      Can you think of a way to do them all with one iteration? Or is this smoke dream from my pipe?

        Re: Change form calc from function Total to dbsum and dbcount

        One could experiment with adding calculated fields for these summations to the table itself. Dbsum() etc are fairly quick. With calculated fields there would be no need for form level calculations and the form should load much quicker.

          I dont know how I would do that.
          Wouldn't mind seeing how.

          With my skillset right now I would try on the record ON Change - descriptively...
          filter on Active .and. Category="Bankruptcy"
          bankruptcyamt =0
          bankruptcycount = 0
          BankruptcyLoss = 0
          select first
          while .not. eof()
          bankruptcyamt = bankruptcyamt + Curbal
          bankruptcycount = bankruptcycount +1
          BankruptcyLoss = BankruptcyLoss + Expectlosses
          ... etc

            Re: Change form calc from function Total to dbsum and dbcount

            If this is the valid translation of the form calculated field

            dbsum("cases","categories","bankruptcy","if(active,curbal,0)")

            then it would serve as the calculated field expression as well.

              Re: Change form calc from function Total to dbsum and dbcount

              Stan, thanks for the information. I have copied my form off to a test form to play with. I went to the cases table and added the fields in and changed the field rules to be calculated. I could see that the formula was producing the correct sums and thought I was good. I placed them on the form and the output there is zero but much faster. I went in to the fields on the form and changed the format to 123,456.00 but didn't help any. Not sure why these are not showing.
              I must add that the form is built off of a set

              Set name: Ticklerset
              parent: cases
              child: ticklers 1 to many
              child: lntype 1:1
              child: expenses 1 to many

                You'll have to recalculate the field rules for the existing records for the calculated field to be populated.

                  Of course, I have done that several times in the past, forgot.

                  I have gone into a record and changed the type from Litigation to Charge Off Litigation. On save, the fields recalculate but when I navigate off to another record, the calcs on revert to the prior calcs before my just changed record. Will I have to force a recalc on every save?

                    Would it be best to create a button to do the recalc on the table?
