Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Editing and Later Adding Passwords to Forms, Reports etc

    Hello,

My apologies for initially posting this under the Web/Browser Applications.

Just wondering is there a way to edit the passwords or a way to add passwords to generated reports or forms?

    Thank You

    Hi Joe,

You can add a password to a layout when you select Save As. I can't see that you can edit an existing password.

If you give a layout a password you can change the password by opening it in design mode, select save as, enter the new password, use the original name.

        Thank you for the replies.

So basically I just spent days building a report and have not locked it with a password and now I need to regenerate it and re save it with a password.

Would be rather cool if there was a form where you can choose a report or form and change or add passwords.

        Thanks Again

        Joe

Not sure what you mean by regenerate.

Open the report in design mode, choose Save As..

Click the password button and enter a password.

Save the report with the original name.

Should take less than 10 seconds.

            Thanks for your help guys.

This helps me greatly. So to rename the password just save as the file give it a name and add the new password.

            Too easy.

              Joe,

Just as a matter of interest, why do you want to do this?

Hi Keith thank you for your interest.

I am new to Alpha 5. Its quicker to learn and develop without password protecting everything as you go because it can be a tedious task typing in passwords each time changes need to be made.

This is why I asked so latter if i need to I can just go ahead and password protect everything. Why password protect everything? SO whoever downloads my program can not edit copy any of my reports or form content which I am presuming can be done if not password protected.

                  Hi Joe,

Now that I understand where you want to go with your application, your main concern should then be to prevent another Alpha developer getting to the Control Panel. This can be done with some help from members of this forum. Setting a password to each layout as you say is tedious and I hate to upset you, but, layout passwords can be read from outside the application.

In all the years of developing applications, I have yet to hear of a developer taking someone's project and passing it off as there own.

I assume that when your project is completed and fully tested by another developer, who you can trust, the download will be with the Runtime.

If this is to be a generic application, why not make it web based and sell this as a monthly subscription? If they don't pay, you lock them out. No need to worry about passwords or developers copying your work.

                    HI Keith,

                    Thank you for your advice.

Do you have an example of a web based system in Alpha 5 that uses the subscription model?

                    Thanks again for your help.

                      No, sorry I don't.

I do have a site where the users pay to have job details on-line. www.churchjobfinder.co.uk

Hi Keith never thought about Alpha 5 as a web application.

Your website is a cool application and can't believe its made with Alpha 5.

                        Alpha 5 is very powerful.

                            Its based on staff performance.

To do a subscription type of package for the application I think you may need to add 1 extra field into the tables of data that separates the data when editing and viewing reports.

As you can imagine there could be 50,000 rows of data and it needs to be separated by some way.

I have not put any thought into this just thinking out load.
