Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Sit Form on top of other forms in Alpha 5

    Hi,

Tried searching the help files and did a quick search in here and had a look at the form properties but have not had any luck.

Is there a way to force the form to sit on top of all other forms within Alpha 5?

    Thank you in advance.

    Joe

If a form is opened using the "Popup" style, the following rules apply:

Xbasic does not pause, as it does in the case of "Dialog" style.

The window can be moved outside of the Alpha Five frame.

Alpha Five menus are not active (just like "Dialog" style).

The window is not modal. (unlike "Dialog" style).

The window is always on top of all other Alpha Five windows.
          There can be only one.

            Joe:
Please do not take whatever I say at face value. I never mean what I say..
When I said "app" that was meant as poking fun at the IPhone when they say .."We have an app for that too.."
In alpha, it is not an "app"..its a function..
An application is what YOU develop off of alpha..
Just want to make sure we are speaking the same language.

              HI thanks for replying.

Don't take me wrong I am very grateful for the help I and many others get.

In my case coming from a different language and trying to learn the Alpha 5 way things can get daunting.

Something that took an hour to do for example in Crystal reports took more than 10 hours trying to figure out in Alpha 5 with the help of a few here
but the next time something similar needs to be done it should take about an hour.

The help files I look at including the online wiki can be vague with answers. Help files and the wiki itself should be put together by inexperienced Alpha 5 users because
the explanation on how to do something will be in my opinion more thorough.

Just some feedback on those reading this and do help others.

Please don't presume we always know the ins and outs of Alpha 5. Short answers don't help and its an idea by starting the help answering a question with a lead on where to start.

This is what I do when solution's are found and people want me to explain on how I resolved something.

G, I know what you were on about but still have not resolved this.

I would prefer to know where to start in resolving an issue and working out the rest rather than having a solution but not knowing where to start.

              That's just me

              Thanks Again

              Joe

Re: Sit Form on top of other forms in Alpha 5

I used to couls repair or make up to 19 reports(filled in to fit a printed form on an okidata 320) in a couple hours by using other reports I had made as a guide. Alpha takes longer for me now than crystal in many cases. I can also get more accurate prints with crystal. The down side is Crystal is not cheap and called something else or owned by someone else.

I still use CR7 so I can make an exe.

I ask what CR has to do with your issue? I use a few dialogs to get information where I do not need to open a second for. Also, unless you close a form when you navigate to anoter one, it stays open behind the new one unless alpha changed something I did not see.

                  HI Dave,

Its just a matter of getting used to what your using I suppose.

Can you sure how and what you do with CR7 as an exe file and with what database?

I only used CR within Visual Studio.

                  Thanks

                  Joe

Re: Sit Form on top of other forms in Alpha 5

You just connect to the table(s) and use it like the alpha report writer, make the exe, and you just sys_shell that exe to print the report. Make sure the report generated has a dat update on print turned on. It will print to the default printer. ver 7 has the ability to make an exe. I cant get later versions to do that. The help file that comes with version 7 is very good also. It will let you know what support files need to go with your app so an end user can print the reports at their desk.

CR is no longer CR and not by seagate and no longer included with ms products like it used to be. They seem to be searching for a price they can sell it for. It is less now, but they are still high. I suspect it will come down in time.
