Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    listbox.JPG

    Its a listbox compiled from a filtered list of records matching the product part_number. So each product has its own matching shortcuts of parts to bring into the form.

    I have another table which holds the shortcuts records and all the parts.

    Maybe being able to do a multi-select would be better? This way the user can select multiple shortcuts. But most importantly, if they manually fill the field, I don't want the shortcut to over-write it but rather fill in the subsequent field.

      Re: XBasic IF statements

      So the listbox displays the values in a variable on the form? We can count the lines in the variable, if so. What's the name of the variable. Scop is layout, session, global?

        Re: XBasic IF statements

        Yes its a variable list, compiled by the matching records from my 'shortcuts' table. The result is stored as a Layout Variable "RS"

        At the moment its just a list box, there was no option for multi-select list...I'm not sure how to implement a multi-select but maybe that will work better.

            Re: XBasic IF statements

            The filter compares the part_number field in my shortcut lookup table to the outgoing_part_number field in the master table. This way it only lists the shortcuts that are relevant for each particular product. The shortcut is selected via "nickname" field.

            See my lookup table below to be clear, I know "part number" has come up a lot in this conversation. In terms of my fields, "part_number" is referencing the product. And rpartnum/rpartdesc/rpartqty references the replacement/repair parts (components) if that makes sense. Up to 15 parts/components can be listed for each product being repaired.

              Re: XBasic IF statements

              We need to get the whole list that the listbox presents on screen into a variable so we can process each choice. The expression that should do that is

              somevar = table.external_record_content_get("repair shortcuts","alltrim(part_number)","","part_number = "+quote(outgoing_part_number))

              So try this in the interactive window (you can copy and paste from here) (use the enter key after each line)

              outgoing_part_number = "enter_a_known_part_number_here"

              ? table.external_record_content_get("repair shortcuts","alltrim(part_number)","","part_number = "+quote(outgoing_part_number))

              You should see Alpha return the part_numbers for the linked shortcuts

              = sjfdljsdf
              dfouu
              uqwru
              ldjfls

              If that works we can proceed.

                when typing the following in the interactive window:

                outgoing_part_number = 2259976
                ? table.external_record_content_get("repair shortcuts","alltrim(part_number)","","part_number = "+quote(outgoing_part_number))

                results in:
                ERROR: Argument is incorrect data type

                  Re: XBasic IF statements

                  The goal is to list the shortcuts by fieldname "nickname" as shown in the previous screenshots. If you look there is a little listbox showing "2 cap 4 diode, 2 cap 4 diode + ECR"

                  This lists the shortcuts depending on the product. It seems to compile the list just fine based on the settings I've chosen but how would we convert this into a multi-select box instead of a single select listbox...

                          Pardon me for jumping in, but you guys are on post 26 and no sample data has been supplied, nor is it entirely clear there is agreement on what the question might be. May I suggest that John upload sample data, and that he use JING to create a short screencast explaining what he is shooting for. JING is available from the TechSmith website for free.

                            Curved ball here !!!
                            I wouldn't want to see the method John is trying to use - in view of how I understand it.
                            It is doable, but overly complicated, restrictive and more..
                            The method is seriously unconventional

                            I see parts being picked and added to fixed fields for part, qty and price.
                            All the parts are fields within the header - in ONE RECORD, trying to work out which 3 fields to put the next part, by checking for the first three, free fields
                            It is a classic case for one to many parts used surely ?
                            Separate the 15 x 3 parts fields into a three field linked table

                              I think post 14 explains exactly what I need. Please take a look at the attachment in post 1 ('2 cap 4 diode' shortcut applied to empty fields) and compare to post 14 ('2 cap 4 diode' shortcut applied, AFTER a fan is listed as part1) - this is my goal. It may be complicated for whatever reason but it seems the logic behind it is pretty straight forward.

                              Logic: press selected "shortcut" to insert related shortcut parts into the parts fields...if the field is occupied (1st row in attachment of post 14), then fill the subsequent fields below with said shortcut. This will allow the user to manually enter data into the parts fields as well as apply numerous shortcuts one after another.
