Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Remove number from string?

    Hi Guys,

    Is there a function to remove a number from a string? eg "keith1" If yes please advise.

    If not, I would appreciate a suggestion as how best to do this.

    OK, I cam up with this,
    x="keith1"
    a=substr(x,1,at("1",x)-1)
    ?a
    "keith"

    Unless there is a better way?

    Re: Remove number from string?

    Hi, Keith.

    Tell us the rule by which Alpha can always determine where the numeric digits begin and end.

    This will tell us things like

    ... the numeric digits are always at the end of the string
    ... there is always a single group of numeric digits
    ... the numeric digits are never scattered throughout the string
    ... the numeric digits have varying numbers of digits
    ... the numeric digits will always be present in the string

    and any other characteristics of your data that could be used to tell the machine how to find the numeric digits you want to excise

      Re: Remove number from string?

      I don't have an xbasic example to post here, but I've written this same function in other languages before.

      Here's a VBA function that does it, as a guide

      Code:
      Function RemoveNumbersFromString(ByVal strInput As String) As String

          Dim iCount As Integer
          Dim strAnswer As String
          strAnswer = ""

          For iCount = 1 To Len(strInput)
              If Not IsNumeric(Mid(strInput, iCount, 1)) Then
                  strAnswer = strAnswer & Mid(strInput, iCount, 1)
              End If
          Next iCount

          RemoveNumbersFromString = strAnswer

      End Function
      Alternatively, instead of checking for IsNumeric, you can check the Ascii value of the character and if
      Ascii >= 48 And Ascii <= 57 then discard it

            Will you ever have "keith123andsometext456"?
            You might need to look at the ASCII table to remove numbers.
            Or.
            Possibly by using a Calculated Field, but if the first line of this post is likely, then you will probably need to parse the whole field.

                Thanks Stan,

                I would never have found that thread with search.

                That does in fact look a lot like the function Michael posted. Great minds think alike.

                  Re: Remove number from string?

                  This works to generate a number to test the code above (to clipboard)

                  Code:
                  'GENERATE A RANDOM ALPHANUMERIC SEQUENCE
                  	dim vn_rand as C
                  	dim vc_rand as C

                  	vn_rand=right((""+rand()),5)
                  	vc_rand=rand_string(5)

                  	dim vstart_string as C=vn_rand+vc_rand
                  	dim vnw as N
                  	dim vtake as C
                  	dim vremain as C
                  		for i = 1 to 100
                  			AGAIN:
                  			vnw=val(substr((""+rand()),3,1))
                  			if vnw<2
                  				GOTO AGAIN
                  			end if

                  			vtake=substr(vstart_string,vnw,10)
                  			vremain=substr(vstart_string,1,vnw-1)
                  			vstart_string=*reverse(vremain)+vtake
                  			'MSGBOX((""+vnw),vtake+vremain+crlf()+VTAKE+CRLF()+vremain)
                  		next
                  		clipboard.set_data(vstart_string)

                    Code:

                    dim stringOutput as c = ""
                    dim i as n
                    dim length as n
                    length = len(stringInput)
                    for i = 1 to length
                    	if .NOT. isnumber(substr(stringInput,i,1)) then
                    		stringOutput = stringOutput + substr(stringInput,i,1)
                    	end if
                    	next i
                    		msgbox("",stringOutput)
                    can be done in xbasic,

                    edit:

                    Code:
                    new_text = regex_merge("12345honori1234ficabili56789tudini01234tatibus56789","[0-9]","")
                    ?new_text
                    = "honorificabilitudinitatibus"
                    this seems to work too.
