Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Having trouble with adding a total field to form and report.

My set is a one to many based on the linking field "caseno" from the parent table "patients" and the child table "patlnit"

I have a field in the parent called "invtotal" that I want to total the charges for each "patlnit."Patlnit" table is the typical lineitem on an invoice and "patients" table is the typical header on an invoice.

I am having trouble understanding the help description and example for the total function.

Tried to do this on a report to print the invoice as well as on a form to enter the invoice, but all I see is a place for the expression which I can't figure out. The help description makes absolutely no sense to me relative to my field and database names. I got as far as "Total(patlnit->total, GRP->patients, GRP-> patlnit" that was it. Returns zero for the total of the lineitems which is wrong. Anything else I add to it returns an "invalid expression" error. I figure I have to put the linking field in there somewhere but everything I try is wrong.
Can someone please complete the expression for me using the names of my fields and databases?

On your report, assuming you have a group for patients, drag drop the total field from the patinit table into the group footer and the summarization dialog will appear. In that dialog specify Total. Alpha should supply the correct expression. See the Invoice report in the AlphaSports sample database for an example.
    There can be only one.

I just purchased the Alpha5v11 software and the sports thing will not load although it is an option on the database list. Tried it on the report. created the expression but result is still zero. What about the form?

Same process but the expression will be different because forms don't have user defined groups.

You might want to attach a sample database here so we can see what the issue might be.

How about attacking from a different angle. In my set the parent is "patient" how about creating a calculated field in the parent that totals the billed charges in each "patlnit" which is the line item child.

That will work. Just be sure you understand when calculated fields are evaluated (recalculated).

Seems silly to ask but you have verified that the field you are trying to total does have values and it is numeric?

Field has values. Thanks for the link on recalcs, but I still need an expression that works in the parent table. Tried this already "total(patlnit->total,grp->patients,grp->patlnit)" still doesn't work. In fact I get an error saying "cannot use function in this context". Tried the same expression on forms and reports and still results are "0"

Re: Having trouble with adding a total field to form and report.

Total() is a function suited for layouts and primarily those based on one to many sets. The calculated field rule for a table knows nothing about the child table you are trying to summarize.

Tablesum() and dbsum() are functions that can be used in your calculated field rule context. You want something like

                tablesum("patlnit","caseno = "+s_quote(caseno),"total")
                There can be only one.

Thank you so much for your time here. I fixed the problem myself. I was being misled by values of old invoices. When I entered a new dummy new invoice the total field was indeed blank. Seems when I set up field rules I forgot to make the total field in the child a calculated field. the old records where still showing the total values so I would get totals on them but the new record was "0". I'm such a dunce sometimes.
