Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Constructing an n-generation pedigree

Im creating a form with a pedigree of thoroughbred horse information.
A horse has two parents (sire, dam)
So I have created a set where a horse table links to itself to find its parents.
So if I wanted to find the great great granparents of a horse, how can I achieve this without creating as many linked sets?
I suppose this would be some sort of loop?

Here is a picture of a horses pedigree with the horse on the left and its parents going right.

I'm going through this process with family trees Steve, and asked the same question.
Where I am at present is

    Character (read horse)
..Link table - Character 1 links to Character 3,4,5 (siblings etc.
    .... Characters displayed.

I am also trying out the Order of the character links using a number, so the heirarchy can be displayed more easily.
Please let me know how you get on with this as I am trying to avoid coding if possible.

Apologies to anyone I haven't managed to upset yet.

Yes loops. But it's not going to happen with action scripting. So, maybe like this (see attached). The help button on the form has the strategy information. This also has a button that answers your other post question about how to select values in 2 fields and filter the table.

        Thanks Mike,

I need to scrutinize it some more. Many thanks for the attached file :)

          Hi Mike,

Where do I find Alpha’s definition for ‘forward’ and ‘backward’ identifiers?

Steven, I don't think Alpha has any built-in pedigree (genealogy) functions or definitions. It's a general purpose database development and management program. From the description you supplied you will need to store the dam and sire id's in each new record yourself. This will very likely involve passing id field values from one record to another. This can be done in lots of different ways. Some of them are illustrated in examples stored in the Code Archive forum of this message board. Visit that forum and look for threads discussing "passing values between forms".

Those appear to be specifications for how the program should operate. Without answering any of the many other questions you have asked, to show you how I think you would be expected to comply with the spec.
Using the data that Mike laboriously captured, I set up a form - screenshots attached.
Showing as example using a set - in a forward manner - to display three generations of progeny of any selected parent. In this case the parent sired two separate generations - top and bottom picture - with its two SSID numbers. Using a set only.

It's not a usable product - just a part of Proof of Concept to show that A5 is capable.
How about you take all that has been done by others, do some work on your testbed. Practice, read and try then come back with a better idea of what you want and have actually done and a clear strategy. And then ask specifically what you may have still have an A5 problem with. Only then, IMO will you definitely advance. I know from going through the same experience, but you have to persevere - in my case cos I'm a slow learner, over many many months.

I know it's possible Stemie, as I have a more complex relationship tree with relatives and also friends of relatives. The permutations are pretty much endlesss.
As I suspect you gathered by now, it's over to you now to get a grip on the basics. The others are not being hard on you; I believe they are sharing the pain barrier with you.
Please post an almost working app for comments and ideas.
