Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

      Re: Default values and Automatic append

      I don't create the code from memory or saved samples or type it manually. Alpha will create much of the code you want for you. I create the operation that performs the basics of what I want to do, right click on the operation and view the xbasic behind the operation, save that and modify it. Are you aware that much of what you see in the Alpha genies is xdialog and thus xbasic?

      The modifications to use the table rates as the source for the room rate and prof fee is.........

      Code:
      DIM Append as P

      	a_tbl = table.open("tpatient")
      	append.t_db = "patient"
      	ON ERROR GOTO ERROR15122011080553318

      	append.m_key = ""
      	append.t_key = ""
      	append.m_filter = ""
      	append.t_filter = ".not. Dischgd .and. pdate = "+s_quote(last_date)
      	append.type = "All"
      	append.m_count = 4
      	append.m_field1 = "PDATE"
      	append.m_exp1 = s_quote(last_date+1)
      	append.m_field2 = "P_ID"
      	append.m_exp2 = "@PATIENT->P_ID"
      	append.m_field3 = "ROOM"
      	append.m_exp3 = "lookup(\"rates\",\"rateid = '002'\",\"amount\")"
      	append.m_field4 = "PROFFEE"
      	append.m_exp4 = "lookup(\"rates\",\"rateid = '001'\",\"amount\")"
      	append.t_count = 0

      	a_tbl.append()
      Used in a filter in xbasic the expression

      lookup("rates","rateid = '002'","amount")

      must have outside quotes. Since that results in quotes inside quotes the interior quotes must be "escaped". The backslash character is used to that purpose. It tells Alpha that the quote following it is literal and not the matching end of the quote that preceeds it.

      "lookup(\"rates\",\"rateid = '002'\",\"amount\")"

      If you have a rates table you can test this in the interactive window. Just copy this, paste it in the interactive, and preceed it with a ? to tell Alpha to print the result to the screen. You should see

      Code:
      ? lookup("rates","rateid = '002'","amount")
      = 400

      ? lookup("rates","rateid = '001'","amount")
      = 150
      There can be only one.

        Re: Default values and Automatic append

        Stan, Thank you for staying late to answer my question, I thought that you manually encoded the codes, and I'm not aware that the codes are xdialogs and xbasic from the genies. I'm still learning how to do things in Alpha Five, it's much easier than Visual Basic 6 or even VB.net or C#.
        I want to create an application for patient monitoring and bills monitoring, one of the things bugging me is how to implement a search capability on a form with a set, example , patient -->> diagnosis and Patient-->> bills, How do i do it in alpha with out showing to end users the standard toolbars of searching , adding, editing cancelling changes to a form or set? and How do i make a menu, is there a menu builder in Alpha Five?

              Probably can't. You can define a companion browse and companion form which Alpha will use when F8 is preessed. These saved forms and browses can have their menu/toolbar options set.
