Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Shortcut Icons vs Alpha 5 black icon

Tried to resurrect a two yr old thread, but don't think it worked.... Does anyone else have a problem with the 'black Alpha 5 icon' overriding a selected icon when making an application shortcut???? Using Windows 7 Ultimate. Need to have variations of an app displayed, each with its own special icon so they can be selected easily without having to select them and read the text....... Anyone else having this problem??
Thanx in advance for any help or comments.

The only time I have seen the A5 icon over ride the new desktop icon is when the desktop short cut created by the installer does not point to the startup control file. You only need to edit the path in the shortcut properties to correct this.

In relation to having two more shortcut icons, I would create a desktop shortcut with an icon you want. then I would go to where the start up file was created for the short cut an copy it two more times with a new name. Then in the two duplicates change the icon file it points to. Now on the desktop, create to new short cuts

Win 7 has a problem with similar naming in the X86 and Prog Folder.
I put the Alpha app outside of the Prog Folders and it works fine with the correct Icon being available.

How do we change the black alpha five icon with another icon from our application?

Right click on shortcut, Choose Properties, use the Change Icon button. Same as any other shortcut.
          There can be only one.

I found out something on changing the a5.window.title, i was able to change the title to something relevant to my sample app, i changed the title using autoexec, why is it that the title went back to alpha five even though the code is not changed in autoexec.?

The only way that I have found to change that icon is using the shortcut creator, there is no xbasic code that I can find. the title can be st in an autoexec or in the shortcut creator. the autoexc is my choice for this. One line of code:

                a5.window_title = "Your title here"

Yap, there is no problem with the code in setting the title, sometimes the title shows up and sometimes it remains as Alpha five, but then i discovered that when i close the database and open it again, the title that i coded is in effect,if i modify the autoexec and run it, the title goes back to alpha five.BTW, where can i find the shortcut creator, is it in alpha five or a separate program? Thanks

the command line is where I always defined the title? You mean there is another way and why?

Nope, i defined it in autoexec, sometimes it shows and sometimes it don't show up. It only shows when i exit the database and open it again

Maybe the command line works better??
I also define the icon in the command line. You can use a .startup file with your app like:

commands currently used in my own any.startup is:
                        -TITLE="Ups Desk 9.11 by K&D Consulting 352-302-2015"
                        -MAXIMIZE
                        -SPLASH = "splash.jpg"
                        -ICON = "log.ico"
                        -NOSYSMENU
