Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Identical Database(Append Records from a Set)

    Can we append a whole set or tables that are related by one to many, one to one or many to many to another identical Alpha Five database?
    Users are working in different locations but are using one database structures, forms reports etc. then at the end of the week users will consolidate their work to a central alpha five database, I know how to append records from a table but i could not figure out how to append its related tables to another database.Please advice. Thank you!

    I know how to append records from a table
    That's what you do, one at a time. There is no means of appending from multiple tables.

      You can have major issues if the the table you are appending TO has any autoincrement fields and/or there could be duplicate values for the autoincrement fields, if they are from different and multiple sources, and the sources alaso have autoincrement fields.

        Thank you Stan and martin, so the solution is that, we should not make the primary auto increment in all databases so that we can just append every table to any database of the same structure and all other objetcs? in relation to the solution for that, can we just then use the application server of alpha five so that users in different locations can update the server? are we going to use the internet connection for that? sometimes the internet connection in our place is not stable,what if there will no internet connection, will the users still encode the data and later on upload all the data to the main server?please guide. thanks much!

          Best asked in the Application Server area.

          the internet connection in our place is not stable
          Doesn't sound like a good idea to set up a web database then.

          we should not make the primary auto increment in all databases so that we can just append every table
          That's up to you. If all the data is coming from remote databases they can have their own unique primary linking field value generation process and when appended there will be no possibility of duplication. You could also have the local database have its own unique primary linking field value generation.

            Thank you Stan, I thought we couldnt append if we use primary keys as auto increment, So i'm planning to set the primary key of one location to start with A000001 then the next database location would be B000001 and third is C000001 and so on, so that i can just append all tables and its related tables from B to A and C to A, Please correct me if i'm wrong.May i asked an additional question with regards to append,Is appending done as a transaction? I mean i would like to create a button and add several action scripts to append all the tables to A from B database? What will i do so that only new records from several tables from database B or Database C will be appended to Database A? Thanks Much!

              Not autoincrement. See this thread for an idea on creating a unique linking field value. Each user you set up could have a variation of the function on their machine by changing the line

              new_po = "PO"+cyear(date())+"-"+"00000001"
              to
              new_po = "APO"+cyear(date())+"-"+"00000001" 'for one user
              new_po = "BPO"+cyear(date())+"-"+"00000001" 'for another user
              new_po = "CPO"+cyear(date())+"-"+"00000001" 'for another user

              What will i do so that only new records from several tables from database B or Database C will be appended to Database A?
              Append operations can be specified to append only unique records. The uniquness would be determined by the linking field.

                Thank you so much Stan for the Code, Time Saver for future append problems, simple database design that could ruin the whole database if i use auto increment without asking for help on this forum.Once again, Thank you so much!

                  In a master-details screen, after entering a few rows what is the best way to discard the entire records (1 in master and many in details) if the user click a cancel button?
                  And how to control the document number continuety in this situation?
