Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Help with Reports (Paper Size, Orientation and Margin)

I am having trouble producing the right output of my report, I have set the Paper size margins etc. but when I print the report, the output is way shorter than the width and height etc., In short What I see is not what I get with regards to the report output. I know that there must be a way in alpha five to do it, Before I posted this, I tried to do it myself so that I will not be criticized for not reading the Wiki and all the Alpha Five Documentation, but I'm so sorry that I have a very small brain to solve this, as it took me one day figuring out how to do it,being so frustrated with the quality of my brain, and to test how small it is, I tried to do it in Crystal Report with Microsoft Access as the database, and I was able to produce the right margins, orientations etc in just five minutes. Moderators and Alpha Experts, please do not prolong my agony, help me with setting the right width and height and margins so that I can get the right output of my report. I have attached the output and the way i have set the properties of the report, Please help me set the properties the right way. Thank you so much in advance.

Re: Help with Reports (Paper Size, Orientation and Margin)

    Hi, Jetson.

Are you trying to position the first field at the extreme left edge of the sheet of paper? i.e. is this a margin issue, or something else?

Take a look at the Invoice report in AlphaSports. It is designed with a half inch margin. Preview it.
Then adjust the margin to zero. Preview it. On my machine I get a very small margin which is probably the printer/driver printable area.

Thanks Tom and Stan, I don't know what's wrong with the way i set, actually alpha sports was my first basis then i searched the wiki and trial and error on the output of the report but still I can't position at the left and the width is too short, I can't get the text or fields to the maximum right of the bond paper eventhough i set the margin to be .2 inches left and right.

            Jetson,

laser printers and inkjets have "non-print" zones along each edge of the sheet. It's where the paper is gripped during printing I think. It varies slightly from printer to printer. Check the specs on your printer. What's the size of the non-print zone along each edge of your sheet? Your layout margin must be at least as large as the non-print zone along each side of your paper. I think you're trying to do something your printer won't support, and I questioin whether you were able to achieve the desired result using Access.

It's working perfectly on Crystal Reports version 8.5, and access, is the ruler above the report designer the same with the size of the paper size? if i set to letter or legal, will the ends of the reports designer match the width? because whether I set to letter or legal, the edge of the designer is measured as 7 on the ruler above the report designer.

Re: Help with Reports (Paper Size, Orientation and Margin)

Letter and legal are both physically 8.5 inches wide. If you have a .5 margin set on both sides then the ruler will show 7.5 inches of usable area (8.5 -.5 -.5). If you set to landscape mode you will have a 10 inch in usable area (11.0 -.5 -.5) for letter and 13 inch for legal (14 -.5 -.5).

The ruler shows how much space you have inside the margins.

                seven inch printable.giften inch printable.gif

If you decrease the left margin to .1 inches then you have a usable area of 7.9 inches.

                  Jetson,

                  Correction.

The ruler at the top of the design page begins where the print zone for the selected printer begins. As Stan says, the ruler shows the space you have within the printable zone.

Jet, we're assuming you are working with a laser or inkjet printer.

I'd be interested in seeing a report from Access that has text 0.1 inch from the left edge of the sheet of paper, printed on a laser or inkjet printer.

Also you have Shrink to fit set in your original second screenshot. That tells Alpha that if the report can't be printed as designed, shrink the report until it does fit. I believe in your case, since the report can't be printed as far to the left as you want, Alpha reduces the size and moves it to the right.

Also, it appears that he has 3 or 4 empty boxes (RTF?) in his layout that go all the way to the right and possibly past the right margin. That with shrink to fit might account for the problem.
