Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Proximity Search

It it possible to do a proximity search in a desktop application similar to the web app plug in? I have been able to do it using zip code to zip code ( as the crow flies). But I'd like to do it based on actual mileage

    Thanks, Pat

Why don't you use a dialog on a form?

        1. Create a grid component which contains the Proximity Search.

        2. Create a form. I would base it on a dummy table; a table with just one field and it does not need any data.

        3. On that form, open the tool box and in the Super Controls, select an Embedded Grid Component. Note: The name Alpha assigns to the embedded grid component is: Xdialog: embeddedgridcomponent1.

Now you have the Proximately Search on the desktop.

        Pretty slick, eh?

How do you create a "grid component" for a desktop when they is no Alpha web project?

Kenn - just tried that - you have to have a web app apparently??

            Re: Proximity Search

Yes, you must create a grid as you would for a web app. [You ONLY need the grids. you do not have to design a web page. Any of the web components can be used on the desktop but you must use an embedded grid to display them] I am working on a desktop database where I will only use the grids and dialogs created in the Web Projects control panel. On the desktop side, you can simply use one table with one field which contains no data. This table is the table on which you build the forms for which you will place the embedded grids from the super controls in the tool box. Any other tables are the tables which contain the data. You do not need any sets unless you need to design a report which would require a set. I haven't looked at the reports in the web part of it yet so it may be that reports from the desktop control panel are not needed.

This is what Alpha means when they say you can use the grids on the desktop and then, if the app is rolled over to the web, most of the web development is done, at least the grid part. I really like this approach because it eliminates form design. Yes, there still is a design factor but the labor and intensity is greatly reduced. This is a very simplistic explanation but it's an awesome way to develop.

              Ken

I tried this and it is indeed slick. A question though on the Proximity Search plugin, will this plugin work using the runtime version of Alpha ?

              Thanks

I don't know. I haven't tried it. It would seem to me that since it works on the desktop, it should work on the RT. Only one way to find out.
