Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Did you confirm that the offending computer(s) are build 3712?

Paul, can you send me just an empty table with the 70+ or so fields in it so I can test a browse that size please?

      Just another thought.
If you have 70 or so conditions to test, there might be some contention if you have copied and pasted the scripts.

Re: How to hide columns in a browse elegantly...

As previously noted, I can see exactly the same issue as described by MikeC. For each consecutive column that is hidden between two other columns an additional divider line is drawn. So if multiple columns are hidden between two other columns then the gap increases by the equivalent of 1 divider line per hidden column. I believe Paul is in the process of submitting this to Alpha.

I attach the example database and tables that I am going to send to Alpha.
Please can some of you look at the database and see if you get the same results...
          Thanks, Paul

I get the same results as you have been complaining about Paul.
There are gaps which are present when there is not a contiguous display of columns.

As a matter of interest, can you replicate this in a formal browse? Not the embedded one, a purpose built one.
I'll try later but have 3 jobs to do before tea.

              Hi Paul,

To start with I suggest you only have one column for Benchmark Time. The column title can then be selected with Case--Select, which is very easy to code. That would eliminate the space from either before or after that column. As for the rest of the columns, there could be another solution.

I'm not sure where your code is for changing the column wifths, but here's a little script that I threw together that fires from a button - I tried it with hiding 2 columns (like show 1 and 2 - hide 3 and 4 -show 5 and 6) nad every other column, and I do NOT get the behavior you describe - the columns appear perfectly

I am inclined to say your issue is the browse itself, in the column widths and title characters

                  Hiddencolumnsform:control_browse1:fortysevenprice.object.width=0

Code is in the Properties-dynamic width.
You might have cracked it with the coded example Martin

Re: How to hide columns in a browse elegantly...

                      Possibly, Ted.
I tried the "dynamic properties" once and found it to be horrible time consuming and not work as well as a script.
He could write a function that would fire at the onchange event of his "column settings" and use the same function on all of them - functions fire really fast, even when they are long

anyway, in a copy of the folder containing the ADB, I would delete the embedded browse and make a new one with just enough fields for testing. Then I make a button and at the onpush event experiment with changing just enough of the columns to determine if the fix is working as expected.

If so, work out making a function that would refresh all columns based the "column settings" values, and put the function in the onchange event for all of them - or wherever necessary - like the the "time change" onchange event.

The other thing I would do is to make the column titles "up and down" instead of "sideways" with the advance column settings. I think part of the problem is with the titles and column widths.

Screens like this, and I have many of them, can be quite time consuming to create where the result is not only functional but also 'pretty.'

                        Hi Martin and Ted,

                        It's 'He' here...

Interesting solution Martin. I will take some time tomorrow to understand it and test it.

My main desire though is that Alpha offer a simple "Hide Column on expression" parameter.
In the main it is an obvious feature in alternative desktop database development environments and is glaringly lacking here.
For me it is as bad as Alpha's desktop browse vertical scrolling deficiencies and general basic desktop presentation such as tabbed layout scrunching up the headings, etc.

Any way, enough moaning on my part. Selwyn himself has acknowledged my bug report and I await his findings.

                        Paul

                            Good morning everyone......

+1 on the "Selwyn response thing!" ~I haven't heard a "peep" back from anyone @ Alpha regarding the last series of desktop related bugs I uncovered & reported [this past week.] I usually receive a prompt acknowledgement/response. They're either ignoring desktop issues for the time being, or they're avoiding me! I [almost] get the feeling that they actually become "irritated" if you regularly uncover legitimate "flaws" [bugs] in their products. (desktop a5 bugs in particular) I can't help but wonder whether Alpha even wants these kind of bugs reported anymore! Seems to me, that when they switched to the 1600 series C compiler, they "re-opened Pandora's box."
