Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    How to use Browse "event"

There is a browse event called "event". How does one use this? I can't seem to find any documentation on this.

And the broader question is, how can I code when a particular cell changes value in a browse where the user changes the value and uses the arrow keys to move up or down. Uing the browse OnFetch & OnChange doesn't seem to really help much.

Re: How to use Browse "event"

googled this - browse events site:alphasoftware.com

    found this - http://wiki.alphasoftware.com/New+Browse+Controls+V9

    ___________

Remembered that v8 introduced some new functionality..

    http://support.alphasoftware.com/Wha...e_Improvements

Browse Events - New Browse Events - Several new browse events are now supported for both stand alone and embedded browse layouts. OnSave - fires when a record in the Browse layout is saved. CanSave - fires when the user tries to save a record. The event can be cancelled by calling the cancel() function. <Column>_onChange - fires when data in a browse column is changed. The <Column> events are defined by inserting the appropriate functions calls into the Browse, Events script. For example, here is how to define an event handler for the 'lastname' column in a browse:

For a stand alone Browse, select Browse, Events, Events. For an embedded Browse, select Object, Event, Event, or right click on the Browse and select Events, Events

In the 'Events' script, define this function:

    function lastname_OnChange as v ()

ui_msg_box("On Change Event for Browse. Browse name is: ",this.name())

    end function

Note that the 'this' alias refers to the browse object that contains the browse column.

      Thanks Al,

I did find that first link but it didn't help, but the 2nd one, of course, has the answer.

Unfortunately, that function seems to be fairly useless. It won't fire if you try to pass a value into it and it won't return a value since it is type "v".

That is not what you explained initially...

It is a UI event initiated when the user changes the value in a cell.

You can set a variable(s) to pass a value into it or out of the event.

If you use global vars, which I did. So that works.

So now it does what you want is elevated from 'fairly useless' to ?more useful?

The scope of the variables usually depend on where they are needed, but I use globals cuz it's easier than going back and making them global later...

                  Here's what I mean:

                  This works:
                  Code:
                  function picked_OnChange as v ()
                  	Dim Global vPicked as N
                  	trace.WriteLn(vPicked)
                  end function
This does not work/function won't even fire:
                  Code:
                  function picked_OnChange as v (vPicked as N)
                  	trace.WriteLn(vPicked)
                  end function

You're not calling the function and passing an argument.

Alpha calls the function when it detects a change in the field and it doesn't call with any arguments.

This is interesting - quick question
                      with an embedded browse
say you have the fields product_code, gross_weight, tare_weight - in that order
if the user arrives at the tare_weight field, and has not filled in a gross_weight, how would you put code in an event to reposition the cursor at the gross_weight field?

Not sure you can. There is no "OnArrive" event for "events".

You have normal access to the browse, as with any function. You can address the gross_weight value as usual.
Here's a working example, when the line discount check is clicked applies a form discount on / off
                            Code:
                            function lncandisc_OnChange as v ()
                            if browse1:lnqty.value=0
                            		ui_dlg_box("OhOh","Requires a quantity")
                            		end
                            else if browse1:lncandisc.value=.t.
                            	browse1:lnprice.value=browse1:lnprice.value/(1+parentform:discountpc.value/100)
                            else
                            	browse1:lnprice.value=browse1:lnprice.value*(1+parentform:discountpc.value/100)
                            end if
                            end function
I cant do this with table rules. And I have an obsessive aversion to global variables.
AND the change occurs instantly as a table field rule would.

Ray, in your test, if you don't enter a gross weight, what happens when it gets to the next field if the embedded browse?
in my case it has to auto-silently reposition itself at the gross weight field
