Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Xbasic Table Search Not Working

    This is driving me crazy, am I doing something wrong here? It's pretty straightforward, I open an alpha table, set an index and search on it:

    Code:
    dim country_id = "US"
    dim rec as n
    dim lookupTable as p
    lookupTable = table.open("country_code_lookup")

    lookupTable.index_primary_put("Code")
    rec = lookupTable.fetch_find(country_id)
    debug.png
    Debug (click for larger)

    I've double-checked by debug and just opening the table in question; the tablename/fieldname are correct, and the table gets opened and has those fieldnames, so what am I doing wrong?

    What are you doing with rec? Why do you say the code is not working?

      Hi Stan,

      Ah, I suppose including the error would be helpful! rec is just what I assign the result of the fetch (last line) to. The error I get is 'Tagname not found', on that line.

        As long as you understand that the result is the record number of the found record and nothing else, ok.

        Tagname not found means the index tag named in the .index_primary_put() wasn't found. Suggest you double check the indexes for the country_code_lookup table.

          Hey Stan,

          Yeah, I use the rec just to make sure I've found a record (my next line checks it, pulls the information I require):

          Code:
          if (rec > 0) then

           	country = lookupTable.country
              	country_enum = lookupTable.enum

          end if
          My issue is the indexes are correct -- take a look at the debug:

          Thanks for your help.

            The debug() screenshot shows me the table pointer and certain properties of the current record. To use .index_primary_put() you must have defined and saved indexes.

              Aha! I was under the impression that index_primary_put() applied an index or defined a field to search by. Thanks for your help, Stan!

                For anyone else encountering this issue........

                If you specify a Tag_Name that does not exist, Alpha Five will choose the closest matching Tag_Name that has the same first letter as the Tag_Name you specified. If there is no Tag_Name with the same first letter, Alpha Five will generate an error message.

                  Re: Xbasic Table Search Not Working

                  I just realized you can do that this way. (without an index, the order() method creates a query list which .fetch_find() can use)

                  dim country_id = "US"
                  dim rec as n
                  dim lookupTable as p
                  lookupTable = table.open("country_code_lookup")

                  lookupTable.order("Code")
                  rec = lookupTable.fetch_find(country_id)

                  The drawback is that with a large table ordering the records might take some time whereas an index is already built.
