Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Find exact match code?

    I want to put a code on one of the typein control in a form, on the OnDepart event of the control,the name of the typein control is Barcode, I want to search the table for the value of the text in the Barcode control, if there is no exact match then I will alert the user. I tried tbl.fetch_find but the code will display any record if the barcode does not exist. I want the search parameter to be the value of the typein field/control , I tried rec=tbl.fetch_find(Barcode.text) and it returns an error.

    dim tbl_product as P
    dim indx_1 as P
    tbl_product = table.open("stocks")
    indx_1 = tbl_product.index_primary_put("Barcode")
    rec = tbl_product.fetch_find("2")
    if (rec > 0) then

    ui_msg_box("ABC",tbl_product.item,UI_OK)

    else

    ui_msg_box("Record not found", "The closest match is record number ",UI_OK)

    end if

    tbl_product.close()

    how do i make the parameter 2 dynamic? rec = tbl_product.fetch_find("2")
    i want it be dependent to a value in a form.
    thanks

      Re: Find exact match code?

      Thanks Ray, got it, I want to prevent the user from ever leaving the field until the exact match is found but the user might accidentally press CTRL+S which is a save button, is there a way so that the code on the save button wont execute? I have put a validation code on the on depart event of the Barcode field and it wont go to any field if I press the tab or enter key, but when I press CTRL+S it cheats the on depart code and the code behind the save button executes.

      Edit:
      At first the code does not have an error, but now I have attached a picture with an error. what could be wrong with the code?

        Ever consider coding the cansave event for the form?
        There can be only one.

          Thank you Stan, didn't think of that, I'll try it. BTW, how will I make the parameter which is the Barcode value of the field on the form to be on the code?

            Re: Find exact match code?

            Jet you changed your original question substantially 45 minutes after posting AND after getting my reply.
            This could make it difficult to help properly and especially for others to follow the thread in sequence.

            The answer to your LAST question in the FIRST post is simply tbl_product.fetch_find(value_in_a_form)

              Sorry Ray I messed the code and I saw the error now. I deleted the Dim shared rec as P, I thought rec is a pointer. And I tried this and it's not working for me tbl_product.fetch_find(Barcode.text) , did I miss something here? I am trying to get the value from the Barcode typein control on the form

                Re: Find exact match code?

                What is "barcode.text" ?
                1. read the help description and examples
                2. test it in the IW

                  Re: Find exact match code?

                  Barcode is the name of the typein control on the form, if it is a button, the name is CONTROL_BUTTON1 by default. My mistake, it is the wrong way to reference field values. it is supposed to be topparent.barcode.value. I think what Stan suggested is better but I dont know how.Stan can you please show how? this is the code.

                  dim tbl_product as P
                  dim indx_1 as P
                  tbl_product = table.open("stocks")
                  indx_1 = tbl_product.index_primary_put("Barcode")
                  rec = tbl_product.fetch_find(topparent:Barcode.value)
                  if (rec < 0) then
                  ui_beep()
                  ui_msg_box("Record not found", "Barcode not found! ",UI_OK)

                  tbl_product.close()
                  end if

                  Stan, If I am going to put a validation on the cansave event, how can I reference this code "rec = tbl_product.fetch_find(topparent:Barcode.value)" to verify if the barcode really exist before saving. Thanks!
