Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Problem printing after email sent

My client is having a problem with a desktop application.
I just upgraded to v. 11 runtime, but they were apparently having this problem with version 10 also.
    Here is the scenario:
They print an invoice to a local HP printer - all that works fine.
They continue printing to the printer - all continues to work fine.
They email an invoice from the form using the email control and the local email client (Microsoft Outlook).
Now they cannot send a report to the printer unless they close and re-open alpha. If they try to send a report to the printer, the printer setup box does not show, and the report appears to go to the windows print info box, but never prints.

The problem only occurs when they email a copy of the invoice.

    Any thoughts?
    Thanks.
    Jay

Can those users access the File menu, Print Setup after emailing and see what the settings are?
    There can be only one.

No, they cannot, but I can and will look tonight after they leave.
      Thanks for the idea.

Re: Problem printing after email sent

        Jay,

        1) Do the print routines specify the HP printer, or are they printing to the "default" windows printer?

        2) In some of the apps I've written I handle this sequence a bit differently. To e-mail a report I "save" it as PDF first, using a shared folder. Then my code to send the e-mail specifies the PDF as an attachment. This has the advantage / disadvantage that pdf copies of each report are available thereafter in the shared folder. I mention this as a possible work around for you if you can't get to the bottom of the present issue.

        3) Wondering if your client would get different results using the Alpha e-mail client, instead of OE ?

          Tom,
Thanks for your thoughts (been working too much today to respond earlier).
          To answer your questions:
          1) They print to "Default" windows printers
          2) I could try sending the PDF to a shared folder, and then sending it to the recipient. I will try this as a workaround if necessary
          3) I could test the results of using the Alpha e-mail client, but I don't think the client will go for this.

          Thanks,
          Jay

            Jay,

I have no clue why your client is seeing the behavior you describe.

Another option for you is to tweak the code you use to print reports. For each you could include code to re-set the "current" printer. Check this page in the wiki.

Perhaps it would be easier to re-set the "current" printer after each e-mail? Couldn't say, but thought I"d mention it.

Re: Problem printing after email sent

For those of you who have been gracious enough to help me, and for those sitting on the sidelines watching, I sent a report in to Alpha using the [email protected] email address. My report was in the form of a 90 second video explaining the problem. Selwyn replied promptly, saying the video was not sufficient, so I got a copy of the app, and removed all extraneous tables, forms and records so that I could reduce the application to the fewest working parts to allow Alpha to duplicate the issue.
By 5 a.m. this morning (don't those guys ever sleep?), Cian had diagnosed the issue, gave me a workaround, and told me the fix would be in the next patch.
The lesson here is two-fold: Alpha is the best company for addressing issues, and make sure you give them a way to duplicate this problem

              Thanks, Selwyn and Cian.

Fast action but not as fast as what I got on a Saturday 2 days after Thanksgiving. In the middle of the day I sent in a description of an issue I was having. 2 minutes later Selwyn replied with a solution. Admittedly it was not a big issue,
                but still, 2 minutes!

Now can you post what the work around is so those of up with the same issue can fix the problem also...

Theoretically any build 3341- 4088 or after should be fixed.

I believe that adding this line to your script might fix it.
Try it after your email commands.
                        report.Output_File_Override("")

                        Hope this helps.

Exact same issue. Build 3381_4096 (on development machine). We can print invoices all day long, as soon as we email one - printing from then on fails. We have to completely exit Alpha 11 to fix it.

Did you try the suggested solution?

After the email line add report.Output_File_Override(""). If you are using ActionScripting, add an inline xbasic action script element and put that line in it.
