Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Put a changeable formula in one variable

    Is it possible to put a formula(with variables) in one variable so that is could be changed by end user without programming it in.

    Example :

    vanswer = var1 + var2 +var3 x.07

    Where vanswer is created with the expression builder within A5.
    Now if I want to change this I woud have to use the expression builder.
    I would like the formula to be able to be changed by the end user.

    vanswer = formvar1

    Formvar1 is a var that has var1 + var2+ var3 x .07 in it. So if the end user had to change the formula they could access formvar1 and
    modify the formula.

    Does this make sense?
    PS. I suck at programming, I just kind of know the basics of A5.

    Thank you, Paul

    What's the context?

    Report, form, ...?
    There can be only one.

      Thats commonly known as code indirection

      Xbasic uses EVALUATE_TEMPLATE( Command_String )

        Re: Put a changeable formula in one variable

        Formvar1 is a var that has var1 + var2+ var3 x .07 in it. So if the end user had to change the formula they could access formvar1 and
        modify the formula.
        Would it be the .07 that you wanted to allow the user to change? Such as a tax rate?

        That's generally handled by having a table where the user can maintain such "variable" info. The formula then looks up the rate in the table.
        There can be only one.

          Re: Put a changeable formula in one variable

          I was thinking if of something more involved like var1 + var2 x 1.24 / 14 . ( where the original formula would changed completely)

          The context could be a report or a form just to find the answer instead of doing it by hand all the time.

            Same question, same answer
            Did you try EVALUATE_TEMPLATE( )
            it does that

              Re: Put a changeable formula in one variable

              Did you mean eval()?

              Code:
              var1 = 7
              var2 = 9

              formula = "var1 + var2 * 1.24/14"

              ? evaluate_template(formula)
              = ""

              ? eval(formula)
              = 7.79714285714286
              There can be only one.

                Re: Put a changeable formula in one variable

                I was thinking of making up a string with an xbasic command, which itself could contain eval()
                Perhaps more involved than Paul intended - beyond an arithmetic statement.

                Within which you could declare the variables themselves as necessary.
                Like a macro code segment.

                I also unfortunately assumed eval() to have been considered already.

                  To Stan & Ray, thanks for the help. At this time functions and xbasic eludes me. So plan B, spreadsheet. Thank you . This will be put on the back burner for now, but I will figure it out one day with your help that you have given me. I now have a starting point.

                    See if this helps. Unzip to a new directory, open Alpha, add this table to one of your databases. Try the form. Activity is driven by the onarrive event of the formula variable field.

                      Stan, this is very close to what I am looking for. Can the "7*13" be put in table so the ui_get_text can read it. Then if the "7*13" has to be changed completely different ,( for example, 3 x 10 + 15 -2), an end user can change this in the table? Make sense???
