Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Sub-Report Question

I have a report based on a course and its lectures. The report also shows a mini professor biography. The lectures are shown in a two-column format.
I want to have a sub-report showing other courses offered by the same professor. How do I accomplish this? Please check the printscreen and if you know how to proceed I will appreciate it. Thanks.3-29-2013 10-31-04 PM.png3-29-2013 10-36-07 PM.png

    See this tutorial
    http://wiki.alphasoftware.com/Sub-Reports

You have the first 1-M link to the lectures, add the second 1-M link to the other courses, insert a subreport for that below

      Hi Elliot,

How about you make lectures which are shown in a two-column format, a Sub Report? Now you can have the other sub-report showing other courses offered by the same professor in the detail section. The details about the professor can be in a RTF in the Page Header. There are many ways you can do this, just need a little experimentation.

        Re: Sub-Report Question

        Thank you both,

        Hi Keith,
Yes, that's the way to proceed, but now I'm having trouble filtering the sub-report where it shows the other courses. I have tried filtering by every table but I'm getting the same result, it only shows the same course it is described above. It is repeating the course name the same times there are lectures in the course.

I don't know if it's a bug or me doing something wrong, but if you remove the headers or footers in the sub-reports and try to put them back they don't appear.

Update: they can be retrieved from the menu but not right clicking on the band.

          Hi Elliot,

Put the professor's other courses (field) in the Group Footer. Not as a sub report.

            Re: Sub-Report Question

But will it show the other courses?
If the professor has 2 or mores courses I think it needs to be in the detail part as a sub-report or I'm missing something.
            last.png

Almost done, only need last part where it has to show the other courses (not to repeat the one describing above).
Putting the field in the group footer is only showing the same course as above.

              Elliot,

The other thing to look at is your set structure. How have you linked the Courses to the Professor?

                It is set as follows

                Professor ----> Courses -----> Lectures
One to Many One to Many

                  Re: Sub-Report Question

That make sense for your data.
For this report done traditionally it would look like
                  PROFESSOR
                  --Course1
                  --Course2
                  ----- ..lecture-1
                  ----- ......
                  ----- ..lecture-n
                  --Course3
                  (category and subcategory)

what you are asking (2 subreports) would be better suited to
                  Professor
                  |
                  | ----> this Course ====> Lectures (One to One to Many)
                  |
                  |====>courses

                  looking like;

                  PROFESSOR
                  ____________
                  COURSE (subreport)
                  ........Lecture1
                  ........Lecture2
                  ____________
                  COURSES (subreport)
                  ........Course1
                  ........Course2

                    Re: Sub-Report Question

Just a thought - and to let people know, you can have 1 -2 -3 subreports in a header and eliminate all other sections.

Many of my reports have exactly that. That way you can place them side by side above or below each other. 1/2 page, 3/4 page, etc. What ever you want there Subs can have any and all sections of the report in them.

Ufff I can't make it work... I have tried all methods and it only shows the same course as above.

                        SubReport.png

This particular Professor has 2 courses, the other one called THE INEXPLICABLE UNIVERSE.

I put the "other courses" part inside a sub-report, and that's the closest I can get to show the courses by Professor, but it is repeating the filed the same amount of times there are lectures in the course above

For example: This course has 12 Lectures so it shows 12 times My Favorite Universe course and 12 times The Inexplicable Universe course

What I want is to only show The Inexplicable Universe which is the only OTHER course.

                          Re: Sub-Report Question

                          Set
                          Proffessor 1 - many lectures
                          professor 1 - many courses
                          all 1 set

then on set make report with 2 subreports in any section you want. Mine made in header is a reular report header witn the whole report on one record and 2 subreports in the same header taht are each about 3"*4".

You have to figure some of it out for your use though.
