Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Re: Add new record to browse Function?

To throw a fly into the ointment here Tim: Where the heck did you find the documentation for <form>.viewlinked() method?

I'm familiar with it, but I've searched everywhere and can't find any documentation whatsoever explaining the extra parameters..... (like using your suggested "dialog_newrecord" parameter.)

I was going to offer another way of using form view (and setting values using a form event). Just before doing so, I took a look at form.view and noticed there are (also) undocumented additional parameters like the *arguments parameters (showing up in the bubble help, but nowhere in documentation) ~ I became curious as to whether the "dialog_newrecord" might work here. Turns out it doesn't. Now for the life of me, I can't figure out what this "*arguments" parameter does.....

I've looked everywhere, with the exception of digging through the wiki..... Maybe it's documented there, but not in the .chm files, and not in the new offline help.

where John said. It is not that I found it. I have always known it was there since v8 came out. ;-)

          There is also A5_open_EmbeddedBrowse_CompanionForm()

This function is designed to be used in a button or an event on a form that is based on a set with one-to-many child tables. It opens a pop-up form to edit the current record in an embedded browse, or to add a new record to the table whose records are shown in an embedded browse.

          Also new in V8

~Good catch! (Too bad so much is missing from the "off-line" help. How do they really expect anyone to learn (let alone find) this stuff without thorough documentation..... Even if/when you do find things like this in bubble help, or in the XBE during "exploration", there's no supporting documentation in the help files as to how to use these methods with the appropriate parameters.)

In this instance, I have to do some research on the "mode" parameter. ~ "add" or "edit" I'm guessing?)

Update: Didn't take long to come up empty handed....
Found "A5_open_EmbeddedBrowse_CompanionForm" in 0 wiki pages
No pages matched the search criteria.....

                Tim,

Thanks for pointing out the error of my ways!!!

My only excuse for not reading the small print in the documentation, is the way the auto help was presented when adding the function. I thought that was all the there was for Style.

I now have it working and understand the syntax. (Till the next time)? Thanks again.

Thank you. I couldn't find any documentation (anywhere) on A5_open_EmbeddedBrowse_CompanionForm().

Update: Found the info on this one in the v.8 notes. Apparently this "v.8" stuff never made it into the documentation.

                          Thanks John;

I know it's there, on that one page. Seems to reason it would be added to where it belongs 3 versions later... But it's not in the help files anywhere else.
(Not in the old .chm, not in the new offline help, nor is it anywhere to be found in the online help/wiki.) ~ I wonder how much else on that page never made it's way into the help files, where most would presumably look for it.)

                              Hi Guys,

New problem when adding new item, if the lookup is changed to Browse, then field rule for Quantity kicks in.

Yes I do want that field rule, but I also want to allow the user to add new Product. Any suggestions?

                              See issue here http://screencast.com/t/rYBbMrJkYw

                                Keith,

show us the code you're using to open the new item form. Are you opening that form as dialog?

Personally, I find the required field field rule to be relentless, and never ever use it. Know that's not a satisfactory response to the issue at hand, but I wager your problem goes away if you check for an empty Quantity field in the CanSaveRecord event field rule instead.
