Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    So confused

Hi there...I am new to Alpha Five and even newer to this forum. I inherited the partial design of a database from someone who is no longer with the company. The software is completely new to me and so far it seems like the most complicated thing to understand. If anyone can offer any advice on how to learn how to use this thing I would really appreciate it. I am generally great with a computer but it seems as though the programming of this is just not sinking in and I'm completely overwhelmed. One specific problem I'd like some advice on is that I was trying to run a quick report based on a set and I am getting this message. I don't even know where to start looking to fix it:

    Script:US-DLG_BOX:@=quickReport_title_var_100810224 line:179
    SetupFieldLists(def,inst)
Unexpected expression type in FOR EACH
    Type is '\'
    Expression is 'inst.fieldSettings'

    Help please!

If that report was created by the previous person, you could try recreating the report and see if that works.

If you have saved your attempt at creating a quick report, open in design mode. If not, start a new one.

Clcik on the Report Settings tab.
Click on the ... button to the far right of Title under the Report Title section.
You should see a dialog for setting up the report title.

          Is it filled in?

If you want us to look at it, close everything but the control panel. Use the Tools menu, Zip database. Attach the zip file result here.
          There can be only one.

            Re: So confused

It is not filled in. Unfortunately, I can't attach the zip file as there is confidential info that I can't share here. Sorry...i guess I wasn't specific in my first message. I am trying to build a new quick report based on a set but I get that above error message...when I click OK the quick report genie opens but there are no fields to choose from in the columns tab. So it's not that the genie won't open, but there is no data to select...

Your set may be corrupt. Take a look at the set definition and make sure the table names are valid and the tables have fields in them.

So let's go to the beginning.

You're viewing the controlpanel. You access the Reports tab.
You begin a new report and you select from the list in Data Source.
You hilight/select your set's name. You choose the radio button for Quick Report. Then the OK button.

The Report Settings dialog appears? You don't see the Available Fields section filled in with tablename->field showing all of the tables and their fields for the tables in the set?

Do you know where the AlphaSports sample database is located? You should find it in C:\Program Files\a5V11\Samples\AlphaSports. Open that database and try a quick report there.
                  There can be only one.

                      Re: So confused

Then Peter's suggestion seems in order and/or try creating a new set and a quick report on that. We need to find out whether the set you're using is the problem or sets in general.

One other thought. What is the name of your set. Names that don't follow Alpha's guidelines can be problematic.

I created a new set and the same thing happened. The name of the set is "archie" so I don't think that's the problem.

Can you create a quick report on the invoice set in AlphaSports?

If not you may have a corrupted Alpha installation that reinstalling might cure.

Ok, I opened up the AlphaSports database and tried a quick report...the fields DO appear for a set there so I don't think that's the issue either...Any other ideas?

Try building a new set like the one you are working with - just give it a new name. See if that works.
