Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Pretty attachment which tells us nothing about what displays it.

What code or action script causes the warning to be displayed?

      Re: Table Overwrite Dialogue Box!

      Hi Stan:

      I have three tables
      1) gers_sku
      2) familycode
      3) gersfeed

These tables are overwirrtten (import operation) every time by a remote database (mysql), and after it is overwritten it becomes a native alpha five database. I have done this to speed up the performance of the dataabse. external DB is very slow.

My issue is that every time I open the operation I see the screen "overwritten warning" and I don't want to see that. I just want alpha five to override the tables regardless.

I am using Import Actionscript, and I don't like the overwrite warning box even though I have "Run Silent" option is selected.

        Re: Table Overwrite Dialogue Box!

Seems you are importing to a new table each time, overwriting the old one?

I suggest you investigate changing from that scenario to importing to the existing table, zapping the existing table first.

          Hi Stan:

Looks like I have to use "a5_zap_table("test")" first then run the import operation or use "table_remove("") function.

Does table_remove() means deleting the table & associated files or it is just remove the link in the application?

            Re: Table Overwrite Dialogue Box!

The TABLE_REMOVE() function removes all the files associated with a Alpha Five table.

              Re: Table Overwrite Dialogue Box!

Stan: an FYI table zapping still gives me overwrite warning. But table remove does not. I guess I will have to spend some time on for the best performance.

If there any funtion I can use to check if a table is in use?

                Also:

I think this is the best solution I can think of.

                1) Check if the table is in use. If yes then tell the user that they cannot perform the task. If no then
                2) Delete the table
                3) Run import operation

                  Re: Table Overwrite Dialogue Box!

Table zapping wouldn't still give you an overwrite warning if you weren't overwriting it, as suggested, but imported to the existing table.

                      Re: Table Overwrite Dialogue Box!

By the way, you would still need to check for the table being in use as you cannot zap it unless you can obtain exclusive access.

Can I force using code to have exclusive access even it is in use?

                          No.

You don't use any code to gain exclusive access but to be zapped the a5_zap_table() function must itself gain exclusive access.

To overcome that kind of situation (locked file, in use etc when it is a file that gets recreated often and not used except for reporting) I use the following;-
tbl.duplicate(A5.GET_PATH()+chr(92)+destfiln,4) 'make new file 4 = all records, no dictionary, index or forms
where tbl is the pointer to the original file and destfile is variable containing the destination file.
Then I close tbl, open the new file and do update_production_index() on the new file, close it
                            And finally
                            DICTIONARY.UPDATE(A5.GET_PATH()+chr(92)+destfiln)

                            And it is super fast.
I set an error trap to report if there was any kind of failure, my users never seem to get it though.
I made this experimentally to avoid zap that is too strict, but there may be other ways.

You did not mention what code (or Action Script) you use to over-write the table?
In most cases for those methods that require user's confirmation, to eliminate user's confirmation dialogue you run the same operation/method "silent":

                              e.g.:
                              append.run_silent()
                              copy.run_silent()

                              and so on.
