Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Post issues with A5 V11

I am long-time, but infrequent user and am trying to update a table with a post from another table. The transaction table has three fields, tally, last, and first. Tally is the number of times the individual has voted in the time period covered by the data. The largest number in that field is 23, the smallest is 1. There are 47M plus records in the transaction table.

I am attempting to add the number from tally in the transaction table to tally2 in the master table, the largest number in that field is 10. The master table has 33M plus records. I am presuming that if Alpha does not get a match, it does nothing, but it looks like I may be wrong. I match the first and last names and tell Alpha to add the value of tally in the transaction table to tally 2 in the master table.

Given the input numbers, the largest number I should get from the post, it would seem to me, is 33, however I am getting numbers in the 80's in tally 2. I have exhausted my meager knowledge to fix probably what is database 101a to those who know more than me.

I am using the genie to set up the post and am woefully ignorant of much past the genie. I would appreciate advice on a simple fix or an offer to do the post for me for which I am willing to pay.

    Thanks,
    Joe

Are you assuming or have you verified that there is only one matching record? Your post operation will add the values for each match.
    There can be only one.

It could be that there are more than one matching record. I do not know.

Re: Post issues with A5 V11

Your post operation will add the values for each match. That would lead to multiple additions to the same master table record. Each Bill White in the master table will be a match to each Bill White in the transaction table and will have its tally2 field increased accordingly.

Relying on first name-last name matches is notoriously inexact. How many Jim Brown, Tom Smith, Bob Jones matches would there be?

I decided to punt. I added the values I needed to a separate column, exported to Excel, and did the deed and re-imported back into a database. That is the backdoor method, but in this case, took about 10 minutes to solve a problem I wrestled with for three hours in A5. I appreciate the replies.

Typically, using firstname, lastname will result in many, many multiple hits. think "John Smith". Is there anything else in the tables that would make the master unique?

If so, your post would be more accurate.

I imagine he used a vertical lookup in Excel and chose range lookup to be false. He would only get one match that way. Not necessarily the correct match but who knows.

Re: Post issues with A5 V11

On uniqueness, there is a voter id number, but I believe the state changed the format in mid stream. I years past, I did posts with the same DB keying on the id number and it worked fine. On this one I got 350 or so matches when I used the id number for the key. Given mobility, addresses are suspect, so the first and last were my not-quite-perfect fall back.

In a larger universe, the first and last will be a real issue. This is a relatively small number.

                      Joe,

Did they change the actual number scheme, or just the format? If it is just the format, you could do a remspecial()to remove any special characters or spaces from the number and just have a pure number.

                      example: remspecial(123-45-6789) yields 123456789.

an example of the master and transaction records would help.

                      Tom

Re: Post issues with A5 V11

The old data is what I have collected since about 2002 or so. Somewhere along the line the numbers got haywire which was probably my doing. The real thing is six digits, but in my old data, I have a large number of id's with eight digits or more, which bear no relationship in any way to the correct six digit numbers. I manually compared the numbers of a sample of people and found a lot of mismatches between my old and new data. I went back added a middle name to the mix and got some good matches. 18M plus updates. I may be able to get DOB on my new data. I am going to check my source and see if I can get that which should yield better results.

Thanks for everyone's interest in this,
                        Joe
