Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Alpha5 Unrecoverable error message

Yesterday I started receiving this error message

    Alpha5 Unrecoverable Error
Unhandled Exception (Access Violation - The thread tried to read from or
write to a virtual address for which it does not have the appropriate access.)
Alpha5 will do a forced termination."

It forced me out of all of the database I had open.
I downloaded the most recent patch and installed. If forced me to re-start the PC.
I was able to open a database but eventually got the same message again.
    I un-installed Alpha5 v11 and re-installed and again loaded the patch.
This morning I was able to open a single database but when I attempted to open a second I received the same message.

    Running Windows 8.1

    Anyone got any suggestions.

    Re: Alpha5 Unrecoverable error message

Are you trying to open the second database from the first one?
    Using a5.load() ?
Can you open two databases at the same time, one from another. It should close the current database.
    Please explain

      Re: Alpha5 Unrecoverable error message

at times I cannot open any databases.
After I re-loaded A5V11 I got the icon on the desk top. If I re-boot the PC I can open a A5v11 from that icon and then open a database. I have always been able to open multiple copies of A5v11 and then open additional database. Now IF I get one database open and try to open a second one, I get the error.

With Windows 8 I have the dbfs pinned to the task bar. If I attempt to open any from the task bar I get the error.

        Re: Alpha5 Unrecoverable error message

Don, please clarify. When you say "open any database" are you talking about dbf's or databases? They are not the same thing.

I don't think you are supposed to be able to open a new instance of Alpha Five simply by clicking on a shortcut to a DBF in the task bar.

The typical scenario is quite different. One opens Alpha Five from the start menu, then chooses the desired "database" to open from the File menu. Each "database" includes its own control panel. From the Control panel you can open a table. "DBF's" are "tables" in Alpha Five, not "databases".

Once you've opened the "database" the sequence I've just described can be shortened by using the Tools menu to create a shortcut to the "database" on your desktop.

You might also check to see if Alpha crashes when you open AlphaSports.
          There can be only one.

            Re: Alpha5 Unrecoverable error message

With Windows 8, I can have the A5 icon pinned to the task bar and have one item associated with the icon to have the properties open multiple databases. Prior to yesterday I may have had as many as four database open on the desk top at the same time. It was never a problem. They each have their own control panel and screens. None of them have the same databases, forms or screens.

I did this morning determine that I can not open a table from a pull down screen in any database I have open. Example: I have a screen with displays demographic info on physicians. I have a one to one relation with a table called "office". If I try to enter data into the field on the screen I can accomplish it, but if I try to use the pull down and add an additional office entry I get the error and I lock up and have to close the database and A5v11 and re-boot the PC to be able to open the database again. The work around is that I close the main screen and input the office info from the control panel then fire up the main screen and select that entry.

Don, are you using the runtime engine to open these databases at the same time?

If not, is your Development version licensed for multiple concurrent use?

                Re: Alpha5 Unrecoverable error message

No on both counts. I'm the only user and I only have it on one PC

                  Re: Alpha5 Unrecoverable error message

Don, I think you should be able to open separate databases with a single licensed development version. I do not think you should be able to open the same database multiple times to view separate tables.

                    Re: Alpha5 Unrecoverable error message

That's correct. I'm not trying to open the same database, I'm just getting the error when I open a new table within the database.

Reading the message, I almost say that I'm running out of the old dbf "handles". I have not added anything (new table or indexes prior to getting the message. This just started yesterday and nothing new has been added to the PC or any software updates.

                      Sounds like Microsoft issue.
Can you back out to an earlier Restore Point before the problems occurred?
Also, where is V11 and where are the tables. Win 7 had a load of trouble when they were in the Prog Files (X86) etc.

Thanks I'll give that a try. I might even un-install v11 and re=install in Program Files (not Prog Files (X86).

Others have recommended installing outside of both Program Files and Program Files (X86).

Was it working in 8.1 as well or 8.0? My thoughts would be to look for any recent security patches that may have been installed from one day to the next. A system restore should bring you back to a working state. If you check your patches first, you may be able to isolate a patch.
