Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Text gets deleted in field while editing a lookup field

I have a tables that started behaving differently a few months ago.
Editing text in a field that has a lookup table associated with it appears to be the issue.
When you place your cursor in between some text to do an edit, you can make one character change and then all of the text to the right gets highlighted and deleted if you try to make another keystroke entry.

Another text issue that irks me is that I have one form when I try to make a change in a field, the first of any fields that I try will not allow the change but if I move to a different field, I can then do a text/numeric change. With the first field that I try, if I reposition the cursor in the field, changes are allowed so it seems like I need to somehow wake up the form.

If anyone has any thoughts on this I would be interested in trying something.

Larry, can you give us a sample to work with?
I haven't come across that sort of behaviour before.

Ted, the zipped file has 3 tables. The product numb2 table is the one with the lookup tables. You may get a few errors when you open the database as I removed 40 or so tables

Re: Text gets deleted in field while editing a lookup field

Its a bug in V11. Does not happen in V10.5.
When you enter some additional text into one of the fields, the Select All seems to fire, so next char overwrites what's there.
This looks like a V10.5 application. At least it opened as V10.5 the first time around.

Re: Text gets deleted in field while editing a lookup field

The problem probably started after an upgrade of version 11.
I think it was fine when we initially switched to version 11.
I have tried version 12 and the issue is still there.

Thanks for confirming it is an issue and not just me

Larry, try reinstalling v10.5 and also v11.
            Might fix the problem.
It has been noticed that a new release can screw existing installations.

Ted, I just went over to a machine with 10.5 runtime and it works fine there.
The other machines with 11 runtime are an issue as well so it must be a bit of a bug which is also in version 12

Well now you have a problem.
V11 development seems to have stopped so you won't get a fix for that.
The last release is not a Production release, so even if it was fixed, you shouldn't use it.
V12 has the same bug? Please report it.

I tried redeveloping anew in V11 from your application and the same thing happens.

Ted, I have reported it via email ([email protected]) ([email protected]).

Will be passing through one of your airports in a few months on the way to Italy to see if the red wine is any good over there.

Selwyn advised that they are looking into it.

The solution for now is to remove the drop down list option so that it becomes a pop up window and editing is no longer a problem.

You are favoured. He ignores me. Well he has so far.
Glad you have a workaround, although I believe that any fixes on V11 are very unlikely.
