Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Exactly.

Of course, I do feel that it is in Alpha's interest to continue to support the desktop. Lots of companies use desktop programs for all kinds of reasons. That doesn't mean that they don't use the web. They typically use both. It's a huge mistake to count the desktop as dead. Alpha should leverage it's powerful advantage in the desktop by supporting and adding new features and fixing bugs, of course.

Precisely but that was not my point. Alpha needs to make known their intentions simply because v11 was different in that they said they would continue to sell and support v11. To put a bunch of builds out over a period of almost a year and then say they should not be used in production and then lett v11 fade off into the sunset; that's not what I call a "proper funeral".

But V11 can still be purchased, can't it?
If so then support should continue, else remove the offer and the Release Candidate and tie it all off.

That has been my contention about this issue for some time. Trading standards would have a field day.

Re: Will there be another official V11 Patch Release??

I put my considerations in the pot:
it's a shame the fact that they fixed the ie11 problem in v12 and not in v11.
They even sent me an eMail saying: hey! your apps built in v11 will not work anymore, but don't worry, how lucky you are!, just buy v12, migrate your apps and you will be ok!
Just to explain it better, i spent an huge amount of time trying to workaround the embedded-browse bug (it displays wrong value in the "one 2 many 2 one" relations).
They call this "cosmetic problem" (yes, I could use these words when my clients call to complain that they get wrong data out), and they told me they fixed it in the last rc, but they did not, the bug still persists.
So I had to rewrite my app using wcd, in other words grids inserted in tabbed UI. I did it, it was about 3 months long work (well, toghether with other projects, but really a lot of time anyhow).
And now, if my client lets its system to upgrade, I'm screwed.
A final though, v12 and v11 desktop are practically the same thing, so the decision to fix the v12 and not the v11 is a shameful idea to force users to upgrade.
Congratulations, alphasoftware, a real fair play. In other words, in the 2012 you sold me a product to develop applications that will cease to work at the end on 2013.
I let you guess my feeling about it.

My reply I sent to a email I got the other day.

"Does making Alpha Anywhere your next developing platform still make sense for you at this time?"

                Good question David.

I write a desktop app. I have V10.5 and V11. I only got V11 because of Windows 8 but there are some major problems with V11 causing it not to run on a lot of computers unless they run it as administrator every time. I downloaded and tested V12 and it has the same problems as V11 and since the problems were never fixed in V11 I can only speculate that they will never be fixed in V12. So there is one strike against getting V12.

I also found some other major bugs in V10.5 and V11 just the other day, again never fixed by Alpha so again I can only speculate they never will and I do not believe I should have to pay for a subscription in the hopes that someday, just maybe some of the bugs going back years will get fixed. So that is strike 2 against getting Alpha V12.

Now it seems the only way a developer can have a prayer of getting updates that just maybe if you are lucky get some bugs fixed that have been around for years it to keep paying for a subscription. Well that kind of puts strike 3 on getting Alpha V12.

I have computers with XP, Win 7 and Win 8. Until just recently when Microsoft quit supporting XP, I would receive free updates to fix problems in it. That went on for over 10 years. Microsoft is doing the same thing for Win 7 and Win 8. Imagine that, a software company the believes it should give a customer as bug free of a product as they can and continues to support those customers free for years. Microsoft never once told me that my subscription ran out so I was just stuck with the faulty software the sold me. And Microsoft is not the only software company out there that does that.

I am old school so I believe in supporting my customers. Maybe that is not in the new way of thinking now days.

I am a small developer that writes an app for a specific industry. This app is low cost and is being used in hundreds of shops around the country. I do not develop apps for big corporations that I can pawn off the expense of a subscription and get them to cover that cost. And with Alpha's track record of not having timely bug fixes I cannot afford to spend thousands of dollars over many years in the hope that a bug from 5 years ago finally gets fixed.

So am I going to use Alpha Anywhere? I do not know. I am on the fence. I am looking at other development solutions out there and while the expense and time it would take to switch is large it may be worth it and cheaper in the long run to do so.

I really like developing in Alpha but I do not know if I have any trust in Alpha anymore.

                Thanks,
                Preston..

Re: Will there be another official V11 Patch Release??

This has been the way Alpha has operated for the last 20+ years. Their philosophy is that by not fixing the bugs in the old version, folks will jump at the chance to purchase the new version. A week ago, spent 5 hours at my customer's business and some of that time was talking about Alpha, what they have produced and what they will continue to produce. They were not pleased to learn that from now on there will be a $999 subscription per year and flat out said they would not go that route. The also were not pleased to learn that Alpha is no longer supporting v11. In the end, they directed me to continue working with v11 but look elsewhere for a replacement for Alpha.

My guess is, there are many small developers with small customers who are in the same boat. It's kinda like, where there's smoke, there's a fire. The customer steers the ship, not Alpha!!! If I want to continue to develop for them, I'd best look for another development venue for them. That's they way business is.....They would tell me no hard feelings, it's just business. Alpha, surely you understand that, don't you???
