Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Caculated Field not updating form field in edit mode.

I have a calculated field "update", in the field rules (no set) I have it set to Date().
When I edit the record in the form it returns the date which it was saved before, not the calculated field.
The form is opened by an embedded browse.

    Thanks
    Bob

    Hi Bob.

Is this calculation done in field rules for the table, or in the form itself? If its in field rules for the table do you get the same result with the alpha five generated "default form"?

Next question. In your custom form are you getting the right result AFTER the edit is saved?

It is done in the field rules of the table.
Get the same results when open default form.
Same results when edit and save on form.

Re: Caculated Field not updating form field in edit mode.

If the default form for the table that has the field rules is not showing the correct result AFTER an existing record is modified and saved, then that suggests there's something wrong in your field rules.

        Check this screencast.

            I am using A5v11 Build 3788_4187.

If you retrace my steps in alphasports do you get a different result? (per my screencast)

Re: Caculated Field not updating form field in edit mode.

after saving the edited record, have you tried to advance t another record(or go back one) then re open the edited record? a refresh like "f5"?

I have never had a calculated field done in the field rules show up right away. Maybe others have?

Re: Caculated Field not updating form field in edit mode.

You will need to create an Event in Field Rules so that OnChange inserts the current date into the field you want.
If you want any opened record to have date() entered, then you will need to put the same in the OnFetch process.
Alpha quite correctly doesn't mess with existing record data, and you cannot use Re-evaluate Field Rules, as that will set all dates to the current date which is probably not what you are after.

If you want the date to be a default date(), put it in the Defaults and tick before and after and also Skip = .t. Then any new record will have the date and it cannot be changed.

I was able to spend a few minutes with Bob yesterday. He's in the midst of converting a large Alpha Four application and did not understand when calculated field rules are "triggered" in Alpha Five. He was expecting the rule to fire whenever the record is viewed. A simple misunderstanding. His rule is working just fine, but differently than he had been expecting. I can relate to his situation. Been there myself. Thanks all for your suggestions.

                    Excellent!
                    This falls into the category of;

"Thers is no such thing as a silly question, however they are the often the easiest to answer"

I remember trying to understand A5 after many years of working with A4, so good on you Bob.
No matter how trivial you think the question is, post it. If you need to know, there will be a good few others in the same boat.
