Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Problem with FIELD WIDTH on Forms, Version-11

I just updated to V11 from V9, and it is the latest version.

I have a problem with field width on forms. If I try to set the width to more than 80, it will automatically reset it to 80. I find that I can set the proper width if I go to object explorer, but it is a pain.

By the way; I tried with different fields and I get the same results.

When I originally place the field on the form, it displays the correct width, but as soon as I want to change it, it will rest it to 80.

I am using Windows XP Pro 32.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Thanking all of you in advance.
    Robert

I have noticed this as well. What happens if you word wrap the field?

      Robin,

      Thanks for the response.

I have tried with wrapping and I get the same results.

I am surprised that more users have not posted about this problem. It made me wonder is there was something wrong in the settings.

The only other thing I could think of is, that the original database was designed in Versin-9. However, I am sure that the overwhelming majority of users have developed their databases in a previous version.

I contacted Alpha, and they directed me to my own thread.

      Hope there is a solution.

      Again, thanks for your response,

      Robert

I think Alpha was directing you to one of the linked threads at the bottom of this one. Check out the one from v10.

          Robin,

          Thanks again.

None of the threads below address my problem. I just want to know if it is a bug or something I am doing with the settings, or if there is a solution.

          Regards

If you keep the properties tab open in design mode you should be able to set the field width there without having to open the explorer or keep right clicking on the field to open its properties.

Re: Problem with FIELD WIDTH on Forms, Version-11

              Robin,

The problem persists. The only way that it works is if I keep the object explorer open, and I keep clicking on current object, and then it works.

I think it is a major problem, especially for those which are new to Alpha5. To just ignore the problem and not fix it, in my opinion it shows that Alpha does not care much about the user anymore.

I just purchased the upgrade just a few weeks ago, and I expected that many of the bugs would have been fixed at this point. I also expected an answer from Alpha, not to just direct me to the forum. I have searched all over and I have not found any solution to this problem.

I have always found that Alpha users are among the most helpful, in fact, I have never come across another forum that even comes close to this one. However, I still do expect an answer from their tech-support, while my 30-days are still active. After that, they will be glad to get on the phone for $150 per incident.
I believe that this is my very last update. I have been using Alpha since the 1980’s.

Thanks to all for your help.

Re: Problem with FIELD WIDTH on Forms, Version-11

Robert, I have one more idea. What if you made a form template with objects formatted already on a dummy table. Like your 80+ character field. If you are able to get the properties set right on that field, you can use copy appearance (also try Copy Advanced) and paste to the field on your 'good' form. You could also try editing a stylesheet and add this field to it then apply it to your form. I am going to test this out too.

I think adding dynamic properties may be when this changed (v10?)

Re: Problem with FIELD WIDTH on Forms, Version-11

Ok, the spin control apparently has a limit! But if you save your 255 character field to the stylesheet you can get its size back by setting it to the default and back to the saved style. Also if you use copy advanced - entry - width, it pastes fine. So while annoying, it is not unresolvable.

Re: Problem with FIELD WIDTH on Forms, Version-11

It's the same if you set a table field to say 10, create a form and use the field, then change the field length on the table to 15.
The form still uses 10 until you manually change it in the format section of the field attributes.

Re: Problem with FIELD WIDTH on Forms, Version-11

                        Ted,

I understand. The problem is that it will not allow me to change the field length. No matter how long the field is in the table, it will only allow me a maximum of 80. However, as I said earlier, I can change it from the object explore, but not directly from the field or object properties.

                        Thanks for your kind response.

                          Not sure I understand.
I have created a field 250 Char and it will display by scrolling.
Right click on the Field (not field AND label) brings up my options for sizing.
Can you show us a picture?

                            Ted,

I hope I posted the images okay. I have never uploaded images to the board before.

As long as you don’t try to make any changes, it remains at the original 100. Once you make any changes, as long as it is grater than 80, it will automatically set it to 80.

You can change it, but only from the object explorer.

                            Thanks for your help.
