Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Wireless printing

    Hello all,

I am having a very difficult time sending a report to a wireless printer. My impression is that Windows 7 (in this case) handles the connection between the wireless device with its own IP address and the port address that relates to the printer. I can certainly set the default in A5 to the printer in question but can not get the rest of the connection to complete. I suspect that I will be able to get this to work if I can force the Windows printer screen to open each time I try to print to the wireless so the user can choose the printer there. I may also be completely wrong.

Has anyone had any luck printing to a wireless printer from within A5 V11?

Further clarification. This request comes from an XBASIC application. I am looking for an XBASIC solution.

    Thanks,

    Gene FitzPatrick

if I can force the Windows printer screen to open each time I try to print
In the report properties print tab check the box Show printer setup on print.
    There can be only one.

      Re: Wireless printing

      Thanks Stan.

I had already done that and it still did not show up. One of the issues as I understand it is that my application prints to several different printers including a receipt printer as well as three different label printers and a full sized printer. This all works well. The issue is that one of my clients has a wireless printer and I can not print to that. I also understand from the various help information that when you set the default printer within Xbasic, the printer setup window will not show up. This appears to be true. So, what I am asking is if there is a way to override Alpha's apparent aversion to bringing up the printer setup window in situations when you have the need to alter the default printer.

        Re: Wireless printing

I don't understand "Alpha's aversion". I print to wireless printers all the time with no trouble at all. The key is to make sure that in Windows, you have the ability to print to that printer. If you can't connect to it from Windows and/or cannot get it to print a test page, then Alpha can't help you.

Once that is solved, Alpha has no aversion to printing to that device. Simply ensure (as Stan said) that the print dialog box is checked and the user will be able to select any device he/she desires. Alpha also gives you the ability to hard code a particular printer's parameters in the code. That way you can force the print object to a particular device. That code is especially good, because it will automatically reset the printer once the job is completed, meaning that you don't have to worry that when you are next printing your Word doc it will be stuck on that old printer.
