Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    change field value dynamically into a table

    Hi guys,

    I have data that populate a table (attached)

    My problem is that I wish on depending of the value of the PAYMENT_TYPE field (it has only two values : Masscolle or Paypal) , it will change the field value SHIPPING in the same table (table attached).

    If you see the table, the field value of PAYMENT TYPE is a word : Masscolle or Paypal.

    I must say to Alpha Five that if the field PAYMENT_TYPE value is equal to the word "Masscolle" the value of the field SHIPPING must be equal to 12 (number) if not equal, the value of the SHIPPING field is equal to 10 (number) but do not know where to start to do that ..

    Does anyone have an idea how I could solve this problem?

    Thank you

    I can't test since it is necessary to have the tbl_products for your posting field rule but you should be able to code the field rule events, record events, cansaverecord,

    tbl = table.current()
    if tbl.payment_type = "Masscolle"
    tbl.shipping = 12
    else
    tbl.shipping = 10
    endif
    There can be only one.

        Re: change field value dynamically into a table

        Another option is to use a field rule lookup table. Look at the field rule for table->payment_type.

        It also enforces that only 2 values can be used and can be expanded by adding records to the new table Product_types.

        I've built an example and attached it.

        I like Stan's idea. It's direct to the question. I've usually used the FR approach.

        It's always good to have choices.

        btw, I'd use something other than table for a tablename in a production system. Need something more descriptive and less generic to avoid confusion within Alpha or for users.

            Thank you Al, but this is not what I need .

            Let me explain better. This is a very short part of my software this software have has more than 50 between tables and sets.

            The data that populate these table come from another database outside of Alpha Five and my table receives these data through a script automatically. Now when the table receive this information I want that the SHIPPING field of the table is written automatically with the number 12 (if PAYMENT_TYPE equals the word Masscolle or section 10 if the field PAYMENT_TYPE value is equal to the word Paypal.

            All this must be done automatically without the user clicking a few buttons.
            Also I apologize if I answer with huge delay to your post but unfortunately today I have a bad Internet connection

                If you are bringing in data that has the payment type set, then a calc FRUL for shipping should be able to handle it with an if():

                If payment_type = "paypal",10,12)

                  I can not show you the script because it is outside of my software, I only get a txt file in that I import into Alpha Five, and what you had suggested I had already tried but not working

                    Hi Stan,

                    I have checked better, and in effect your suggestion is perfect but only if I type by hand record by record.
                    Here I receive from outside only a txt file with some data that I use to populate one table .

                    there is a way to update automatically my table when this will be populated for these data ?

                      Hi Guys,

                      I have found a way to make what I need also if is not that I do not like this way .

                      I use the table update method to modify the shipping field value.

                      I use this method two times , the first for to update the shipping field with a query filter "PAYMENT_TYPE= 'Masscolle'" and updating the shipping field with the right value (12) and the second time to update again the same table but with a query filter "PAYMENT TYPE = 'PayPal '" and giving the value =10.

                      As I told I don't like this because I use two time the Update Method , but at the end is working. If you have a better idea I will appreciate if no, never mind. The update working well

                      Thank you

                        Re: change field value dynamically into a table

                        C,

                        You don't have to run the update operation twice. You can change your expression to nest IF() functions. Here's an example:

                        Code:
                        ' from interactive window
                        '
                        ' it is possible to nest conditions using the IF() function.
                        '
                        ' assume < 10 is too cold
                        ' assume > 25 is too hot
                        ' otherwise assume just right
                        '
                        current_temp = 20  'assign value for testing
                        ?if(current_temp < 10, "too cold", if(current_temp > 25, "too hot", "just right"))
                        = "just right"

                        ' now change value for testing
                        current_temp = 8
                        ?if(current_temp < 10, "too cold", if(current_temp > 25, "too hot", "just right"))
                        = "too cold"

                        ' now change value one more time
                        current_temp = 30
                        ?if(current_temp < 10, "too cold", if(current_temp > 25, "too hot", "just right"))
