Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Upgrading Alpha Five v. 11

It's budget time again, and I have to list how much it would cost to upgrade our current Alpha Five version 11 Developer edition and A5 v11 Runtime edition. We have one developer with a desktop and laptop and maybe a dozen users with their own laptops. There is a single application that covers about everything we need although sharing added records can be complicated.

What would we buy to upgrade? I see a Developer Edition License (or what?) for ~$1000 per year, but what about the runtime people? We certainly don't have an application server, but I don't see other prices. The people reading this budget will probably not check a web page, forget calling sales to ask.

If you have to justify the upgrade I think you'll have a hard time pointing out any features or utility not present in V11. Assuming nothing breaks in win 10 and you're not moving to a web/mobile app not much has changed from what I can tell. The runtime isn't listed on the Buy page so I think you'll have to call.
    There can be only one.

You do not have to have a big expensive server. You can use almost any windows based computer from about xp(or less) and up.
Whoever does the development can do all the upgrades to the data app and simply "hit the switch" so everybody has it. Keeps everybody on the same platform, so to speak, using their runtime.

If you have v11, all you get by renewing is nothing because the updates for v11 stopped. V12 has almost no new features as Stan said, but some bug fixes were done.

For the little bit of difference in money, get v12. My 2 cents worth.

Looks like we hope v 11 keeps running on Windows 10. Alpha sends me lots of email suggesting an upgrade for new features - none of which I understand. We consider sneakernet state of the art!

        Thanks

          They're already running V11.

          No need to upgrade anything?

We aren't talking program stuff here; it's all about budget. It took three years to get version 11 after requesting it. So the request needs to be in before we know we need it.

The meeting happened yesterday, and there is no longer a worry about updating A5 v11. Staff would like us to use a ready made museum program and make our collection available via web.

So I am documenting our current v 11 app in hopes one of you guys get hired as support when management comes to its senses.

                  Well,
That is one I have never done! A museum app. Boy, did ideas pop into my head when I saw the word Museum.
                  LOL

What sort of ideas does "museum" evoke? Seriously.

The museum apps I've seen devote scads of space to a description of an item and its provenance. As a Girl Scout museum most of our stuff has been categorized by GSUSA's NHPS. If NHPS calls that green dress GSI 1A 1, so must I. NHPS has a list of possible parts of GSI 1A 1 which a lookup table provides as soon as "GSI 1A 1" is entered. Badges work similarly; there were only so many made, and we have pictures and lists of all 1300 or so. Museum apps also spend a lot of effort on donors, which we rarely know.

What would you put in a "museum app" for general use?

Just as one is a lot of 360 degree shorts of exhibits.
I like lots of pictures that can be zoomed out or even auto zoomed out
                      Those keep a visitors attention
Verbage is a good thing in moderation.
Just because you have to follow a naming convention does not mean it has to be the only convention. In fact search methods can be separated and combined in many cases.
Badges? Laid out on appropriate backgrounds and very high quality images can be placed in 1 or more sliders starting with the bottom tier and graduating to the top that is clickable to the verbage and maybe another image of that badge.
                      That is just to start.
If there are sales?: Pictures, movies, hard items and other can be offered in a store again with jumps to articles for that.
A blog where articles can be posted by the proper people about any aspect of the GSA.
                      There is more.

Plus we have access to killer videos if you consider little girls modelling the stuff their mothers and grandmothers wore.
