Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Prevent field data changes based on user secuity

    How to allow changes on a field based on user security. lets say only Mgrs can change the data, all may see it,

    #2
    I can make the field read only.. Then create an exact form that only Mgr can access and leave that field normal.
    That is a very long way. hope there is a better way

          Hi Mike,

          You don't mention if you're using a grid or an UX, but the grid absolutely gives you those options.

            USER_NAME() returns the name of the current logged on user. Requires that the database be password protected.
            USER_GROUPS() creates a CR-LF delimited character string list that lists the groups that the current user is a member of. Requires that the database be password protected.
            You can test to see if the user is a member of the manager group,

            Assuming you are talking about a form: From Dr. Peter Wayne's book, in the CanChange event, Deny permission to change a record.

            if user<>"Mgrs" then
            cancel()
            end if

              Mike, I tend to have different levels of access and update options;
              View (Guest)
              User (Operational)
              Super User ( CRUD options)
              Admin(Full control)

              Login decides what the person can do and the options are easily set in the Security part of Alpha.

              If you would like an example, just post back.

                Thanks for the responses...
                .Gregg, my issue is in desktop.. So that sample can not help me.
                Ronald you are correct and I use that control on certain areas..
                Ted, you are also correct, but in this case I am trying a single field in a form, that all security level have access.
                There is one field, that every one can see, but I want to restrict access to it and access to change to only the Mgr people.
                As I said I can do it by having a dup form with Mgr rights, accessible via a hot spot near the field.
                I was hoping to control the field.
                I also tried to make the field inactive upon entry, and again by hot spot activate it. Not so effective,

                  Put this in the FieldEvent "On Arrive" for the form

                  if(user_name()<> "guest",topparent:Data.disable(),topparent:Data.enable())

                  In my example, "guest" is the user group, Data is the field I want to restrict access to.

                  Only Guest can update the data, but it it at a simple level. You may need to disable the Edit Pencil as well.

                    From Dr. Wayne's book, field object events on a form.
                    CanArrive, Deny permission to land on a field. This is the same as disabling a field in form design, but it is programmatic control.

                    dim global user as c
                    if user<>"supervisor" then
                    cancel()

                      Neat solution Ron. Much more elegant.
                      You could use this as a way of restricting lots of fields all over the database if you had a "tick list" of the ones you wanted to lock down.
